Passive Programming
What is it?
Passive programming is events, activities, and opportunities that allow for patrons to "interact with the library, explore literacy, and connect with each other, (Fitzpatrick, 2023)." These events are not neccessarily academic in nature, and help to curate a positive perception of the library.
Fitzpatrick, J. (2023). The impact of passive programming on high school learners.
Why have passive programming?
Passive programming is an often simple, cost effective way to engage patrons and stakeholders with the library. Passive programming can:- increase student engagement with the library, - promote literacy and love of books, - build a sense of community among students, staff, and stakeholders.

Examples of Passive Programming
Reading Challenges
Monthly Displays
Activity Stations
Displays should be interactive, engaging, and regularly changed. They can be ased on a monthly celebration, holiday, or event. Having an interactive component to go along with the displays help to engage students with the collection.
Activities can be placed around the library to make the library feel welcoming and to engage students. Some examples include puzzles, paints, coloring pages, legos.
Monthly or bimonthly themed reading challenges can be done throughout the year. Students who complete the challenges, can earn a reward or incentive.
