Lack of education

This image shows the great inequality of educational opportunities around the world. Children in stable and wealthy countriues have much more access to quality education and attending safe and fostering schools. On the other hand, millions of displaced children living in refugee camps or conflict do not have the same opportunities for education. According to the UNHCR, over half of refugee children are out of school and are lacking basic literacy and numeracy skills (UNHCR, 2020). This educational inequality keeps poverty cycles going on and impedes the development of entire communities.

Lack of affordable housing

This photo shows tent cities, which represent the growing global crisis of inadequate and insecure housing. The continuous rise of housing costs, unchanging wages, and limited social housing options all contribute to this issue (Habitat, 2023). This lack of affordable housing majorly affects low-income families, people of color, and refugees, which forces them into overcrowded and inadequate living conditions.

Climate Change and Environmental Injustice

This photo shows a low-income community in a deep flood, which exemplifies the unequal impact of climate change. Wealthier communities have more resources to adapt to environmental disasters while low-income communities lack the infrastructure and resources to prepare for or to recover from these extreme weather events. (News Wires, 2024). This huge environmental injustice burdens the most vulnerable populations, which further widens social and economic inequalities.

Social Prejudice and Discrimination

This photo shows a kid in a wheelchair gazing at other children playing, which portrays the social barriers that people with disabilities face. Even though there is a growing recognition for disability rights, there is still a lot of social prejudice and inaccessible environments that still limit their inclusion (WHO, 2023). To create inclusive cities we require physical accessibility but also to remove social stigmas and to ensure equal opportunities for everyone.

Gender-Based Violence

This photo shows a woman alone at night, which highlights the issue of unsafe public spaces for women. Women face daily struggles such as street harassment, assault, and the continuous fear of violence, which significantly limit their mobility and access to public resources (UN Women, 2023). This lack of safety allows for the continuation of gender inequality and restricts women from living a normal and peaceful life.

Inadequate Public Transportation

This photo shows a crowded bus scene in a a big traffic jam. This illustrates the global challenge of inadequate public transportation. The limited access to affordable, reliable, and efficient public transportation affects mostly low-income citizens and limits their access to jobs, education, and essential services (World Resources Institute, 2020). This lack of adequate public transportation just strengthens social and economic inequalities.
