“Reference List” is a self-directed workshop that provides an overview of reference entries and guidance on how to create a reference list that contains entries used in a research paper. In the following steps, you will discover the benefits of including a list of references, learn how to create them in a way that facilitates academic exchange, and understand the role these tools play in the making of scientific papers.

Introduction
Academic writing and speaking require ideas based on documented literature. Its purpose is twofold: on the one hand, it lends more credibility and formality to the author's work; on the other hand, it allows members of the discourse community to access the sources of information that could be useful for their own work. In academic writing, this documentation has a special place called reference list.
General Information
Reference list
The reference list is made up of reference entries that gather the most important and relevant data of a source (Gaos y Lejavitzer, 2002, p. 42). By having this reference list, it is possible to:
01
Organize cited works and referenced information in the preparation of an academic paper.
02
Identify and locate a specific source.
This list does not document consulted works, nor is it a section that provides more information to the reader; therefore, it cannot include works that lack a proper parentetical reference: (year, author, page).

Artificial intelligence tools
Artificial intelligence tools, also known as large language models, facilitate lateral brain learning. However:
01
The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), an entity that brings together the major deliberative bodies for medical science, has stated that tools such as ChatGPT do not meet the requirements for authorship (2023), as it cannot take responsibility from what is written.
02
McAdoo (2023) also points out that the papers produced by these tools cannot be publicly retrieved or consulted.

Referencing AI tools
There are ways to include in an ethical manner in academic writing:
01
When writing, explain the origin of the idea was "In response to a prompt"… "the chatbot responded"… (Company, year).
02
Include the search result as an appendix after the reference list, in an effort to let the reader have access to the content.
Note that these tools cannot be considered as authors; consequently, the AI tools should be included as the software used to retrieve information. Follow the example below:
Company. (year). Chatbot or virtual assistant (Version) [Large language model]. Link
