section 01

What is Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on autumn in the United States, Canada, Saint Lucia, Liberia, and unofficially in countries like Brazil, Germany and the Philippines. It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessings of the harvest and of the preceding year. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday as well.

SECTION 02

History

To understand the origins of this beloved holiday, we need to journey back to the year 1621, when a group of English colonists known as the Pilgrims had just begun their settlement in what is now the state of Massachusetts.

The Pilgrims had made a difficult journey across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Mayflower, enduring harsh weather, disease, and other challenges along the way. Despite these hardships, they were determined to make a new life for themselves in the New World. But things were tough in those early years. Many of the Pilgrims were farmers, but they struggled to grow crops in North America's unfamiliar soil and climate.

section 03

Thanksgiving in Canada

Over time, Canadian Thanksgiving became an important annual tradition, just like its American counterpart. Families would come together to share a meal of turkey, stuffing, and other seasonal foods and to give thanks for the blessings they had received, while there are some differences between Canadian and American Thanksgiving.

While Thanksgiving is often associated with the United States, its roots go back even further in Canada. In fact, many historians believe that the first Canadian Thanksgiving may have occurred even earlier than the Pilgrims' feast in 1621.

The first official Canadian Thanksgiving took place in 1872 when the country was still very young. The holiday was celebrated on a different day than now; originally, it was held in November to give thanks for the end of summer rather than in October as it is today.

The meaning of Thanksgiving today:

Thanksgiving provides an opportunity for people to reflect on the importance of family and togetherness. It is a time for people to set aside their busy schedules and focus on spending quality time with those they care about.
