Promoting knowledge dissemination and health literacy

Societal outreach enables PhD-students to share their research and expertise with a broader audience beyond the academic world. This contributes to the dissemination of knowledge and increases public awareness of relevant topics in health sciences.

Within the context of the institutional policy on social impact of research, researchers can apply twice a year for funding through the Social Valorization Fund to support social valorization activities. Such activities can be of many kinds: science communication and contributions to the public debate, community service, development of tools and guidelines for user groups, policy advice, etc. More information on procedure and modalities can be found via the UGent Intranet.

Funding by UGent for social valorization of research

For all faculty-related questions regarding social outreach, please contact the chair of the Faculty Committee on Social Outreach (hannelore.denys@ugent.be) or the supporting policy officer (anne.magherman@ugent.be). There is also a social outreach teamleader in each department who can serve as your first point of contact. Soms departments also have a societal outreach team, for more information contact your teamleader. An overview of these team leaders can be found on the Intranet.

Social outreach contacts

Experience with societal outreach can benefit PhD-students in the job market. Employers often value candidates' skills and ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with various stakeholders

Strenghtening professional skills

Achieving societal impact

By engaging in societal outreach, PhD-students can create a direct impact on society. They can, for example, contribute to solving societal problems, influence healthcare policy, or stimulate public debate within the field of healthcare.

Engaging in societal involvement

By being involved in societal outreach, PhD-students are encouraged to become aware of societal issues and to actively contribute to positive changes in society.

Engaging various stakeholders through societal outreach can enrich PhD-research by integrating new perspectives, insights, and ideas into the research. This can lead to more relevant and impactful research outcomes

Enriching PhD-research

Societal outreach provides PhD-students with the opportunity to develop valuable communication-, leadership-, and collaboration skills. This involves explaining complex concepts in an accessible way and learning to communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse target groups.

Developing communication-, leadership- and collaboration skills

From each department there are one or more social outreach representatives who are member of the Social Outreach Committee. You can contact them in case of further questions or need for support for social outreach. The names of these representatives are mentioned in this link: In case there is a social outreach team in your department, they will be happy to help you realising your outreach-plans.
