PRESENTATION
Welcome to the platform under construction dedicated to young quartets. The aim of this site is to provide advice, testimonials and contacts to support young musicians in their careers. You'll find practical and theoretical informations in five categories : various resources such as directories of professionals and institutions, a section on interpretation and musical practice, another on relations with the public, advices on individual and collective health, as well as introducing yourself. This guide is linked to a European project developed by two artistic structures. The Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and the Premio Paolo Borcian International String Quartet Competition are held every 3 years. Between each competition, the organizations organize master classes: at the Vibre! Festival in Bordeaux and at the Casa del Quartetto in Reggio Emilia. This collaboration is made possible thanks to the support of the European Union.

HEALTH - Trauma prevention
We feel it is important to include posturology in the health section of this guide. Musicians' bodies are constantly in motion: during their playing, their rehearsals and their performances. As with any practice that involves long, repeated actions, a musician's poor posture can lead to musculoskeletal disorders if it is not properly considered and treated. This part of the guide is based on the work of physiotherapist Antoine Zanghi, who has been working for over two years in the residence for young quartets in Bordeaux. He specialises in treating the bodies of artists, both musicians and dancers. As part of the residency, posturology workshops are used to raise musicians' awareness of the traumas and pathologies specific to their artistic practice. This part of the guide is divided into 2 sections: the first lists health advice on diet and the second proposes a series of exercises to take care of one's posture and avoid the development of pathologies that could become a long-term handicap in the musician's career.

presenting yourself orally
As part of the Vibre! festival, we were able to set up a partnership between two worlds which, in theory, are unlikely to meet: that of music and that of lawyers. As a result, the Conférence du Barreau de Bordeaux was invited on its practising secretaries to work with the musicians. The Secretaries were young lawyers who had been distinguished on the basis of a highly demanding oratory competition. The organizers' intention was to enable the quartets to adapt exercises linked to orality, which are essential to the practice of professional musicians (e.g. introducing a concert orally, presenting yourself to the press, presenting yourself to patrons) By clicking on the + icons, you'll find specific advice on speaking, as well as case studies and exercises. In addition to these tips, on the right-hand side of this page you'll find a video presenting these eloquence workshops for young quartets. PRESENTATION TIPS

string quartets
Recording a record, a crucial step and specific skills Young musicians are used to playing live, but don't always know how to prepare and adapt their playing for a recording, or how the tools used work, or the role of a sound engineer who can be a real artistic director. They are not always aware of the importance of editing and post-production work Sound engineer Hugues Deschaux, an international reference in music industry, is giving a workshop in Bordeaux on sound recording and recording under professional conditions. Each young quartet learns how to edit a recording, make patches and leave with a quartet movement recorded in professional quality.
The rudiments of speaking
Public speaking can be a very anxiety-provoking experience for everyone, whether initiated or not. A common difficulty in public speaking is related to self-confidence. Regardless of their individual characters and self-image, the quartets had to be given to the idea that the audience listening to the speaker will always be sympathetic. There's nothing more terrible for a spectator or the audience than to see the embarrassment of someone who's speaking, so naturally you feel compassion for them and want them to pull through. Then, to make ourselves audible, we also had to deconstruct the fear of silences. To do this, we adopted a very simple method which consists, as musicians systematically do, in counting down the silences when speaking: the speaker can, at selected points, count down in his head (1,2,3,) so that the impression of eternal silence disappears. Finally, as far as posture is concerned, we've also worked on some very simple keys adapted to the kind of speaking encountered by professional musicians. For short speeches in front of the camera, you can adopt an upright posture, with your feet planted firmly on the ground and your hands behind your back. In other circumstances, you can use your hands to punctuate your speech. In such cases, you need to be careful to get rid of parasitic gestures such as touching your jewelry, rings or bracelets, your hair or scratching yourself. Unsurprisingly, it is essential for the quartets to practice together in order to : - Identify each other's strengths and weaknesses - Reassure each other about the exercise ahead - Identify a “communicator” who will naturally emerge to lend himself or herself more than others to these moments of speaking. For each musician, preparation is essential: just a few minutes after a musical rehearsal will be enough to make each musician progress in the exercise.

To complement the work done in master-classes, it can be useful for string quartet musicians approaching a new work to know the historical and cultural context in which it was composed, as well as the composer's intentions. To help them find their own way and their own aesthetic, we have decided to set up a workshop on aesthetics and the history of interpretation, led by musicologist Jean-Michel Molkhou. This workshop also provides an opportunity to listen to great interpretations, sometimes extremely rare or ancient, of a work chosen by the young quartets in residence. Such listening and exchanges are particularly useful for making your own choices.
The challenge of renewing audiences for classical music is essential. That's why it's so important to reach out to the younger generation and introduce them to the string quartet's extraordinary repertoire. The Vibre! Festival has set up several school projects, including a meeting with high-school students, who in 2025 will form the jury for the young audience of the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition. Discover a video of this meeting, which aroused the enthusiasm of the students, some of whom are not at all familiar with classical music.

Masterclasses are an essential step in progressing as a quartet. Vibre! and Casa del Quartetto organize a series of high-level masterclasses every year when there is no competition. In Bordeaux in 2023, members of the Jerusalem Quartet and the Modigliani Quartet coached 4 young European quartets. In 2024, Amandine Beyer (baroque violinist) and the Quatuor Modigliani gave coaching to 4 young quartets. As part of the Erasmus + project, two quartets have been selected to take part in the Casa del Quartetto in Reggio-Emilia in 2023 and the Festival Vibre! in Bordeaux in 2024. They are the Elmore Quartet and the Quartetto Goldberg.
Dialogue with other art forms is an interesting way of reaching new audiences. It's in this spirit that Vibre! presents concerts every year, combining string quartets with other art forms such as dance, visual arts, jazz, electronic music and cinema. This enables fans of these different arts or genres to discover the string quartet. It's also an exciting process for young musicians, who participate with other artists in an often rich creative process. You will find below videos showing dialogues between dance and music set up in 2023 and 2024 as part of the European project.
The presentation of the quartets
At the dawn of a career on the road to professionalism, the question of how to present the quartet to the public and the media was discussed. To this end, we worked out a framework that they could use together. This should not be set in stone and resemble a poem learned by heart, but a set of language elements uniformly used by the musicians. Everyone must work together to answer these questions and build the presentation: - Who? - Why? - How? The “Who”: answering this question means establishing a musician's identity, leading to the quartet's presentation. The best way to captivate the audience is to tell a story. Example: We are quartet XX , composed of X Y Z and W, we've been around for X years and met under the following circumstances. Y and Z knew each other, but it was this event that prompted us to form a quartet together. The challenge of the “Who?” is to personalize the shared story together, adding anecdotes that will distinguish the quartet. "Why" and "How" in the same way as for "Who?", personalizing the story is fundamental to building an identity in the eyes of the media or the public. Example: We've chosen these works because of the history we've discovered on this occasion. Through the intermediary of a particular musician, we were able to penetrate the composer's universe and grasp his message, which touched us. As we've already mentioned, the challenge for the quartet will be to extract the storytelling elements that are essential for making a lasting impression: people love personal anecdotes, and the one that speaks will be all the more captivating. The idea behind this framework of extremely simple questions is to enable the musicians to reflect together on key, common language elements that will form the basis of their communication. Obviously, these will need to be adapted before going to a particular event: you don't express yourself in the same way to a specialized media as to a novice audience. The key, once again, lies in preparing to speak.

Tips for managing the emotions of speaking engagements
One of the needs identified during the Vibre ! Festival was to give musicians simple exercises to practice posture, get rid of parasitic gestures and desacralize speaking. One of the exercises presented was the “false profession”. A speaker is assigned to a conference to present a trade to journalists curious to find out more about it. The job has no real existence: - Radiator shepherd - Fashion brigadier - Tire hunter The speaker has to present the job with the following constraints: remain as professional as possible (upright, feet firmly planted on the ground, with a clear voice and low speech rate) and always answer the question posed in the affirmative. Example: Hello sir, are you a radiator shepherd from father to son? Yes..... Have you thought of switching to the boiler breeding market? - Yes, for a few years now I've been developing my business to breed baby boilers and find fertile female boilers.
In addition to being fun, this exercise helps to de-sacralize speaking and impose a professional posture, while being stimulated by improvised responses. It helps to identify the strengths of each musician, as well as any parasitic gestures and linguistic tics, which can then be gradually erased. The quartets were also given a very practical tip during the workshop: the anchor point. The aim is to trick the brain in moments of stress. To do this, in calm moments (watching a film, for example) for a few minutes, you need to find a gesture that the brain will assimilate as a pleasant moment. For example, hold your hands and rub them gently. This gesture should be repeated for several weeks, and only in moments of relaxation. Then, when the musician has to speak, he or she can reproduce this gesture, which the mind has assimilated as a pleasant moment. He will thus have developed an inking point. It is absolutely essential that this gesture be discreet. You can't choose to tap a table, play with your hair or scratch your head.

The String Quartet for all audiences Far from the elitist image that is sometimes attached to it, the string quartet is a universal genre that can reach all audiences. The quartet's mobility is an asset. With 4 chairs and 4 music stands, a quartet can perform almost anywhere. The quartet's extraordinary repertoire is a huge asset in bringing it to a wide variety of audiences. It's easy to adapt the repertoire to the venue and the audience you want to reach. It's an important responsibility to bring culture to audiences who are either excluded or far removed from classical music. That's why the Festival Vibre and the Casa del Quartetto, with the help of the European Union, bring string quartet music to rural areas with little cultural offer. Vibre! also organizes short concerts/encounters in places as diverse as hospitals, nursery and primary schools, social centers and associations. These concerts are all the more successful when they are prepared in advance by local associations.
