Duke Forest
Citizen Science
The Duke Forest Herpetofauna Citizen Science Project empowers volunteers to participate in the conservation and study of amphibians and reptiles. By engaging the local community in data collection and observation, the project aims to enhance scientific knowledge and conservation efforts in Duke Forest. This project plays a role in fostering community involvement in scientific research and promoting the importance of biodiversity conservation.

Participants
The project calls for volunteers of various backgrounds, united by their interest in herpetofauna and environmental conservation. -Community Members: Local residents 18+ and passionate about conservation and eager to contribute to scientific research. -University Students: Duke University students who gain hands-on experience in field research and data collection. -Professors and Scientists: Experts who guide the project, analyze data, and ensure scientific rigor.
PURPOSE & IMPACT: Community scientists help the Duke Forest to collect wildlife data on a scale that we never could do alone. Over time, we can learn more about the herpetofauna that currently exist here and how to better manage the Forest so that they thrive.
Impact and Benefits
Species Identification: Data has provided valuable insights into the various types of herpetofauna species within Duke Forest.Habitat Preferences: Observations have highlighted specific habitat preferences, aiding in targeted conservation efforts. Volunteer Impact: The involvement of volunteers has significantly expanded the project's reach, resulting in a comprehensive data set that enhances the overall research impact.
Observation: Volunteers explore designated areas in Duke Forest, searching for amphibians and reptiles. Recording: Observations are documented using cameras and smartphones, capturing images and notes on species, behavior, and habitat.
Data Collection
Tools: Wooden planks, gloves, and lifting tools are used to gently uncover and observe herpetofauna. Technology: Smartphones and cameras for documenting observations.
Equipment
Online Database: Volunteers log their findings into a secure online database, ensuring data accuracy and accessibility for further analysis.
Data Entry
Scientific Analysis: Scientists and researchers evaluate the collected data, focusing on species varietals, habitat conditions, and ecological interactions..
Evaluation
Sharing Results: Findings are communicated through scientific publications, community presentations, and educational materials, promoting conservation awareness and engagement.
