PAPAN

Papan is one of the oldest and smallest towns known for its rich history of tin mining industry. It got its name Papan due to its initial production of Chengal hardwood from Kledang Hills before transitioning to a mining town after the discovery of tin deposits. This map showcases the historical attractions located in Pekan Papan.

ISTANA RAJA BILLAH

Its original name Rumah Besar translated from Mandailing term 'Bagas Godang' which is residence for nobleman. It was a pillar of influence for the local Mandalings and surrounding Muslim communities. Rumah besar functions as a great hall for its people, a venue for official meetings among community leaders, ceremonies, and the general administration of Pekan Papan.

Located on top of a small hill within the compounds of the 'Mandailing village' alongside other historical buildings such as Masjid Lama Papan and Rumah Asal.

PAPAN NEW VILLAGE

GALLERY

Built in 1951 during the Emergency Period (1948-1960), this new village house was part of a forced relocation of villagers from nearby old villages around Papan Town. They had to rebuild their dismantled houses or construct new ones using available materials, such as raw tree trunks for columns and beams. The standard plot for these houses was 60x90 square feet, allowing for small-scale cultivation. However, due to limited suitable land, this row of houses was built on existing vacant commercial lots, leading to unresolved land title issues.Today, the Papan Heritage Conservation Group uses the house as the Papan Heritage Gallery, showcasing the town's history with artifacts donated by the community. The gallery attracts many visitors on public holidays and weekends.

OLD PAPAN

SCHOOL

Built in 1936 by a well-known tin miner, this shophouse served as his residence and office. During the Japanese Occupation (1942-1945), the miner was killed by the Malayan People’s Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) for his close relations with Japanese officers and was considered a traitor. Another miner later purchased the house, obtaining mining concessions in Papan and planning to demolish properties for mining in the 1960s. In 1975, he loaned the building to the Papan Chinese primary school after his mining activities made their school building unsafe. The global tin price crash in 1985 devastated Malaysia's mining industry, inadvertently saving Papan and this building from demolition. The school relocated in the 1990s, leaving the building vacant since.

TIMBER HOUSE

The two-story timber shophouse, constructed in the 1920s on a street known as "New Town," is part of a historical row of five similar buildings. Of these, only three remain, with this particular shophouse being the only one still habitable.

Originally, it shared a common side wall and kitchen with an adjacent twin, but now only half of the roof remains, with a few old wooden trusses protruding from the vacated side. The last resident was an elderly woman named Kam Jie, who passed away two years ago. The Papan Heritage Conservation Group currently rents the house as a library and meeting place.
