LATERZA
The question of the origin of the name of Laterza has been debated, some writers think that it derives from "Latentia", a place of caves and hiding places; for others it derives from the Latin "Tertiam" with reference to the soldiers of the third Roman legion who set up their camp there. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that Laterza is located along the via Appia nuova which connects Taranto to Rome, following the route of the Appia antica still visible in some places. Another suggestive hypothesis traces the name Laterza back to the Cretans who fled after the war with the Mycenaeans and founded a colony here in honor of Laertes, father of Ulysses.

LATERZA
In Laterza there are many monuments linked to the local religious tradition. There are many rock churches frescoed and lived in by monks in past centuries and many Christian-Catholic churches located in the town centre.

Mater Domini Santuary
mater domini sanctuary
In the heart of Laterza stands the Sanctuary of Maria SS. Mater Domini built between 1736 and 1753. The Sanctuary has a beautiful white marble altar inlaid with pink and blue marble which contrasts with the simplicity of the façade. The plan has the shape of a large latin cross with a ribbed vault divided into three parts by fake columns. According to tradition, in 1650, in the crypt of the church, the Madonna appeared to the shepherd Paolo Tria, blamed by the Marquis D'Azzia for the death of many sheep that could not resist the cold winter. More and more sad, he went to the crypt of the Sanctuary and in front of a portrait of the Madonna, she appeared to him, giving him serenity.

Since then, the patronal feast takes place on May 20th: the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession through the streets of the town escorted by a procession of praying faithful.

San Lorenzo Church
san lorenzo church
In the heart of the historic centre, the bell tower of the mother church of San Lorenzo martyr stands out fearlessly and brightly, a true eulogy to the town, visible from many points and useful for orienting yourself among the whitewashed streets. The church is the first example of Dalmatian architecture mixed with Apulian Romanesque in Puglia, and its façade, perpetually kissed by the sun, overlooks the ravine, almost as if it were a welcome poster for those looking at the town from the other ridge of the canyon. Built in 1408, it has "sisters" in other municipalities in Puglia, which remember it for common shapes and architecture. Characteristic is the rose window, splendid and imposing, decorated with columns and arches. The interior, divided into three naves, houses important frescoes and paintings.

Maria SS. Assunta Church
Maria ss. assunta church
The oldest church in Laterza is the Church of Santa Maria La Grande dating back to 1112 (12th century). First used as an abbey hosting many friars. It was built by Countess Matilde of Matera in the 12th century. The portal is surmounted by a mullioned window. The temple has three naves and baroque elements are evident. Together with the Church of the Holy Spirit, located in the north-west area of the town of Laterza, the Church of Santa Maria La Grande is named Parish of Maria SS. Assumption and Holy Spirit.
