INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

  • I am working as a marketing and communications intern for City Girls Barcelona. This organization plans engaging events and unique experiences for a community of women around the city of Barcelona. City Girls was founded by Fernanda Grace in 2021 and has grown tremendously, with over 3k followers across 3 social media platforms.
  • My main tasks and responsibilities within this organization are content creation, event planning, and brand strategy. I have been creating content for TikTok and LinkedIn for City Girls Barcelona, Norrsken House Barcelona, and Inner Flow Studios.
  • This internship experinece is contributing to my professional development in many ways. Through this marketing position with City Girls Barcelona, I am gaining first-hand experince in areas of marketing including live event management, social media content creation and management, brand partnerships, and more. Marketing is a huge umbrella in the professional world of business, and the opportunity to try out different areas in the marketing sector through this internship is extremely valuable.

WORKING IN SPAIN - CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

  1. One difference I have noticed is the way that people greet each other in the workplace here in Barcelona versus back home in the United States. In Spain, it is common to give a hug and to kiss each cheek of someone with whom you have a professional relationship. In the United States, this would be considered overly informal, and a handshake would be much more typical in this scenario.
  2. Another difference I have noticed is the way time is treated in Spain versus in the United States. For example, my supervisor and I met with a professional from another company during the third week of my internship. When we arrived to the company's headquarters to meet with her, we were informed by the front desk that she was running 40 minutes late. It seems to be much more typical and acceptable in Spain to be late to things than it would be in the United States.
  3. The third difference I have noticed is how the general workplace culture in Spain seems to be more relaxed than it is in the United States. The "workaholic" energy that is often present in the United States, and is even expected most times, does not seem to be the typical approach to working that people have in Spain. There is more of an emphasis on being social in the workplace here in Spain than there is in the United States.

WORKING IN SPAIN - CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

4. The fourth difference I have noticed is the words people will use to greet each other in the workplace. I have noticed many people in the office greet each other by saying "Hola, que tal?" In the United States, we were taught in Spanish language classes that "que tal" was a very informal greeting and was only to be used in a setting with close friends, but here in Spain I hear it used even in a professional environment. All of the cultural differences I have observed and experienced during my time in Barcelona are extremely valuable for my overall intercultural knowledge and awareness. By observing these differences between my home culture and the culture of Spain, I can better understand how to interact and build relationships with people from Spain and from other countries that have similar cultural practices to those found in Spain. By practicing adaptation and observation in a professional setting, I am becoming more prepared to confidently build professional relationships with people from cultures that are different than mine from all over the world. It is very important for my professional development to see the world of business and marketing from different angles and unique perspectives that I may not have previously considered before this internship abroad experience. With each passing week, I am strengthening my intercultural awareness and learning about cross-cultural business practices from other professionals around me.

    INTERNSHIP REFLECTION

I have had an incredible experience in the IAU Summer Internship and Study Abroad program. I had the opportunity to intern with City Girls Barcelona, a community for women in Barcelona to meet other women in the city and engage in exciting activities together. I also worked with Norrsken House Barcelona, a coworking space committed to community impact and sustainability. Another organization that I got to work with in this internship was Inner Flow Studios, a fitness studio committed to bettering the body, mind, and soul. I was able to work in different areas of marketing for all three of these organizations throughout my 8-week program. Some of my accomplishments include capturing and editing video content to be posted to Instagram Reels, Instagram stories, and TikTok. I also participated in event planning and execution by brainstorming event ideas for City Girls Barcelona, capturing content to be posted to socials at events for Inner Flow Studios, and preparing for the Norrsken Summer Party which had over 400 attendees. Each of these organizations offered me a different perspective on what it could look like to apply my communication degree to working in marketing in my future career. I gained valuable experience in digital marketing, brand partnerships, and event coordination that I will carry forward with me into my next internship and eventual job after graduation. I had a wonderful relationship with my supervisor, Fernanda Grace, founder of City Girls Barcelona. We maintained clear communication throughout the 8-week internship program, and she encouraged me to share ideas openly and without judgment. During my interview for the internship, Fernanda told me that she was looking for an intern to come in with fresh ideas and that this internship would be whatever I made of it. I am so grateful that Fernanda challenged me to post at least once a day on TikTok for the last 4 weeks of my internship because it allowed me to build an impressive portfolio of over 40 videos that I filmed, edited, and posted to social media. I would recommend this internship to any student who has an interest in marketing and wants the opportunity to try a lot of new things. One reason I was so successful in my internship with City Girls Barcelona was because I said “yes” to everything I was able to. If there was an event outside of the typical “work” hours that presented an opportunity for me to gain work experience and learn something new, I always said yes. Taking advantage of these opportunities allowed me to expand my network in Barcelona, see cool parts of the city I would not have otherwise seen, and even led me to film content with Ronaldinho, the Brazilian former professional footballer who was named FIFA World Player of the year twice in his career. I couldn’t be more satisfied with my experience in this program at IAU and I am so grateful for the opportunity to have interned with such an amazing organization and team.
