Whole Brain Teaching is a method of teaching and learning that tickles different parts of the brain. Each part of the brain is activated during a whole brain teaching lesson.

Brain Regions

Chris Biffle of Whole Brain Teaching shares a detailed lesson on the parts of the brain and Whole Brain Teaching.

The Prefrontal Cortex is where we process data from our senses. It is our brain's strategic planner, allows us to learn, houses our working memory, and controls our emotions.

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is a brain structure that plays a role in many behaviors, including motivation, action, reward, and addiction.

Pleasure Activated by Uncertain Rewards In a Whole Brain Classroom, games are played that activate the limbic system and pleasure by uncertain rewards. A few examples of games played to activate the Nucleus Accumbens in a Whole Brain Classroom are Scoreboard, Starries, and Super Improver.

Nucleus Accumbens

Limbic System: Emotions The Limbic System is the center of your emotions. What you like or don't like is controlled by your limbic system. In a Whole Brain Classroom, the Limbic System is activated when the teacher is giving emotional content to a lesson - connecting real-world learning for their students.

The two different learning minds: Wandering Mind and Gamified Mind.

Rachel Steffen

Whole Brain Gold Certified InstructorRachel is a second-grade teacher who is passionate about creating engaging lessons for her students. She loves the way that Whole Brain Teaching gamifies, excites, and engages both her learners and the teachers to love learning. Learning about the parts of the brain, how each part aids in the learning process, and how it is all connected is very important. Happy learning!

The visual cortex is one of the brain's most trustworthy memory areas. You remember facts much better than names because information about people's appearance is stored in your visual cortex. In a Whole Brain Teaching lesson - students will be activating their Visual Cortex by SEEING their partner and teacher during the Magic Circle (Mirror Words and Teach/Okay).
