EPIC POEM

An epic poem is a literary composition in verse that narrates the historical or legendary deeds of a hero or a people, through which the memory and identity of a civilization or political class was preserved and handed down. Epic poem, the oldest handed down to us in Germanic literature. Composed around 700 by an Anglo, which has come down to us, transcribed by Wessex scribes, in a single manuscript from the late 10th or early 11th century, it consists of 3183 verses. Beowulf is the longest epic poem in archaic English and one of the oldest surviving ones. The manuscript in which it was found is generally dated around the year 1000. The dating is still uncertain, however the most significant clues collected so far by scholars would tend to place it around the middle of the 8th century. With its 3182 lines, it is the longest Anglo-Saxon poem; it came through a single manuscript, the Cotton Vitellius, preserved at the British Library.
