Biography

george orwell was born in bengal in 1903.he studied in london at the eton college. he travels down and out in paris and london because of his menial jobs; but he also writed novels, essay and worked as a talk producer at the bbc. he was a socialist against any form of totalitarianism and despotism. he took part to the indian imperial police force and in the spanish civil war. his most successfull script is animal farm and 1984. he dies in 1950.

"1984"

it was published in 1949 but it's original title was "the last man in europe". "1984" was actually written in 1948: definal title is the reversing of the last two digits."1984" is a dystopian novel: is a genere of a fictional writing that explores slocial and political structures in a dark world.

dystopian society

the term dystopia defines society characterized by poverty, squalor and oppression.the oppression was an attack on totalitarianism and dictatorship. George orwell was concerned was particularly concerned with how technology (cameras and microphones) could be used to monitor and control the public. in this type of society there is a lot of manipulation via propaganda (big brother), room 101 (brainwashing), newspeak (new language). The book is about what Orwell thought the world could have looked like in the year 1984. It describes a terrifying world where governments control and watch everyone's lives. The book is very famous infact, In 2005, it was called one of the 100 best English-language novels.

setting and characters

the story is based in oceania that was involved in the war with eastasia and eurasia. the main character is winston smith, he lives in a country ruled by a powerfull "party" and the leader is big brother. winston smith is the character the reader most identifies with, and the reader sees the world from his point of view understanding the suffering of his world. Winston hates totalitarism and wants to change the world; he falls in love with julia who agrees with him and is led into rebellion against the government.

People in Oceania belong to three groups:

• Inner party - powerfull people;

His picture is seen everywhere, along with the words "Big Brother is watching you." However, it is not clear if he is a real person.

• Outer party - like Winston and Julia, people who lives a normal life but are always watched;

• Proles - poor people but had more freedom.

Newspeak is the new language of Oceania that has to replace the Oldspeak to force Party conformity. Syme is a minor character, a language expert who works at the Ministry of Truth on the new edition of the Newspeak dictionary. Syme embodies censorship at its most extreme, that of a totalitarian regime.
