Broader Market Reach

High CQ enables companies to effectively enter and serve new international markets by understanding and meeting local cultural preferences, expanding the customer base and increasing market share. Companies that demonstrate cultural intelligence build a reputation for inclusivity and respect. A strong, positive brand image attracts more customers and enhances loyalty, leading to sustained profitability. This broad market reach, supported by a culturally intelligent approach, allows companies to tap into diverse markets successfully.

Lorenz et al. (2020) highlight the dark side of cultural intelligence, exploring its impact on opportunism, ethical relativism, and customer relationship opportunities. Their findings suggest that excessively high cultural intelligence levels may lead to opportunistic behaviors and ethical dilemmas, which could ultimately undermine profitability and reputation in the hospitality sector.

Validity & Ethics

The article explores how CQ influences employees' work performance. Drawing from the theories of Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences and the Individual Differences Theory by Motowidlo et al., the study defines CQ as a multidimensional construct encompassing metacognitive, cognitive, motivational, and behavioral capabilities. It investigates the impact of four CQ dimensions—Knowledge, Strategy, Drive, and Action, on task performance and contextual performance. The study finds that Knowledge CQ and Drive CQ positively influence both task and contextual performance, with Drive CQ being the strongest predictor. However, Strategy CQ and Action CQ do not significantly affect performance outcomes. The research underscores the importance of CQ in enhancing employees' effectiveness in culturally diverse settings, suggesting that organizations should focus on developing CQ through targeted training and development programs.

Hu, Zhou, Wu, and Gu (2018) developed a new scale to measure cross organizational cultural intelligence and examined its implications for organizational effectiveness. Their greater adaptability, innovation, and market responsiveness, all of which contribute to improved profitability in the global hospitality industry.

Utilizing survey data from 386 migrant workers and their supervisors, the study finds that higher CQ enhances innovative behavior through increased knowledge sharing. However, this positive relationship is significant only in workplaces with a strong climate for inclusion, highlighting the importance of an inclusive environment. These findings reveal how CQ facilitates innovation in multicultural settings, providing practical implications for managing culturally diverse workforces to foster innovation.

Benuyenah and Mustafa (2023) conducted a phenomenological analysis to explore the influence of cultural intelligence on the cross-cultural adaptation of Chinese expatriate workers. Their findings suggest that higher levels of cultural intelligence facilitate smoother adaptation processes, leading to improved employee performance and organizational outcomes. This implies the investments in cultural intelligence development can enhance employee productivity and, consequently, profitability.

The participants for this study will include hospitality industry professionals, including managers, executives, and employees, who possess relevant experience and expertise in cross-cultural contexts. A purposive sampling technique will be employed to select participants who can provide valuable insights into the research topic.

In a study by Moynihan, Peterson, and Earley (2006), the researchers examined the relationship between multicultural team experience and cultural intelligence. They found that exposure to working in multinational teams positively influences cultural intelligence levels, suggesting that organizations can enhance cultural intelligence through diverse team compositions, thereby improving profitability.

Interviewees are selected industry experts and professionals with cross-cultural experience. Semi-structured interviews to gather in-depth insights will be conducted using open ended questions to obtain more broad opinions.

Primary Data Collection

In an increasingly globalized world, understanding how to interact with diverse cultures is essential. CQ, defined by Earley and Ang (2003) as the ability to function effectively in culturally diverse settings, comprises four dimensions: metacognitive, cognitive, motivational, and behavioral CQ. This research explores how these dimensions influence students' ability to analyze a business situation involving cultural differences. The study involved 210 upper-class university students and used a case study method to assess their problem-solving abilities. Results indicated that motivational and behavioral CQ significantly enhance problem-solving performance in cross-cultural contexts, while metacognitive and cognitive CQ did not show a significant impact. The findings highlight the importance of CQ, particularly motivational and behavioral dimensions, in improving cross-cultural problem-solving skills, reinforcing the value of CQ in educational and business settings.
