Isabel was born in 1451 in Madrigal de las Altas Torres (Crown of Castilla) Fernando was born in 1452 in Sos

del Rey Católico [crown of Aragón]. They got married in 1469 .

When Isabel's brother Enrique died in 1474, she became queen. But Juana [ Enrique's daughter ] also claimed the throne which led to a war of succesion

Five years later Isabel won the war and Fernando became king of Aragón. this two monarchs completed the Reconquista. They also established the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 . It punished every people who weren't Christians they also tortured and killed them . Not only did they did that, they expelled all Jews from Spain.

Age of Discovery

This period is called the Age of Discovery because during the Early Modern Age many European explorers discovered new territories and conqered them . In the Middle Ages, many Europeans began to buy silk and spices from Asia. They belived that you could get to Asia by sailing west.

On the day 3 August Cristopher Colombus left the port of Palos in Spain whith three ships La Niña, La Pinta y La Santa María. He did 4 voyages : 1st voyage 1492-1493 2nd voyage 1493-1496 3rd voyage 1498-1500 4th voyage 1502-1504

Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro were conquistadors .Cortés conquered some Mayan cities and then the Aztec Empire. the conquest ended in 1521. Pizaro sailed from Panama city to the Inca empire with 180 soilders. To conquer the Incas they took the Inca emperor prisioner. This conquest ended in 1533. Pizarro conquered Cuzco one year later.

King Felipe II became king of Portugal in 1580. he won the battles of San Quintín against France and the battle of Lepanto against the Ottoman empire.

He couldn't speak spanish, so he gave important positions in his court to foregin nobles. He fought many battles against the French and the Turkish Ottoman empire

He became king at the age of four but he delegated his power to his mother and favourites.

King Felipe III had no interest in his duties as king so he delegated his power to nobles called favourites

he was defeated in the Thirty Years' War and he lost the Kingdom of Portugal.

Ferdinand Magellan was born in Portugal. In 1519, he left Spain with 265 sailors in several ships and crossed the Atlantic Ocean. He sailed arround South America and was the first man to cross the Pacific Ocean. He discovered the Philippines, where he died in a battle. Juan Sebastián Elcano led the expedition back to Spain. But only 18 sailors and 1 ship came back.

iIn the 16th century, Spain became the largest empire in the world, with territories in five continents.Spain was really rich so the empire expanded. Gold and silver from the Amricas financed the empire.

iIn the 16th and 17th centuries, the Spanish territories in the Americas were divided into two viceroyalties called New Spain and Peru.

King Felipe V rulled whith absolute power, so he made all the decisions. He declared Spanish the only official language and introduced the Ley Sálica which prohibited women to become queen.

Carlos III ruled Spain in the second half of the 18th century. He wanted to improve the lives of the Spnish people. He built public hospitals in the cities
