What is the action film genre ?

The action film is a film genre which predominantly features chase sequences, fights, shootouts, explosions, and stunt work. Which is what you can easily find in -almost- every film nowadays. And that's why it is also difficult to identify a purely action film genre because so many cinematographic works include action elements : it is now a part of the cinema recipe ! There are a lot of sub-genres such as : Action comedy, action drama, action horror and it goes on and on... Nevertheless there are five main action film genre that I'll present to you.

These films intertwine war and military themes, often featuring intense combat sequences and heroic soldiers. The intensity and the fights is mainly what the viewers are searching for, just like the film "SAS: Rise of the Black Swan" or even the famous "American Sniper". But it can also be for historical motive as some War and Military Films are inspired by true events just like "All Quiet on the West Front" which is inspired by the WWII.

Those films encapsulate the spy action genre. Espionage, secret agents, and thrilling chases are common elements.And he reason that it attracts people- mainly me- may be that we kind of see how a spy/secret agent work, even though it may not be all true. By including mystery and suspense, but at the same time intense fights, shootouts. We feel deeply immersed in the film, as a lot of things can happen, we can pass from absolut discretion and quietness to an insane fists or gun fight, back to strategy, etc... One of the perfect example is the film "Ava" or "Heart of Stone".

The Western shoot'em up action genre is grandly involved in action films, with classic shootouts, standoffs, and comic book-style heroes fighting dynamic villains whic are the signature of Western movies.

Martial Arts actions movies often follows a solo protagonist who practises martial arts. A lot of the martial arts action film showcase impressive fight choreography, stunts and martial arts skills.
