Intruduction;

Compost is a mixture of decomposed organic matter used to enrich the soil. It improves soil structure, water retention and provides essential nutrients

Goals;

  • To know the effect of compost on soil fertility
  • To compare water retention in soil with and without compost.
  • Evaluation of plant growth in both types of soil.

Composting/US EPA

How to make it

1. Site Selection Choose a good site that has good drainage and ventilation. It can be a corner in the yard or in a specific pot. Make sure it is easily accessible. 2. Preparation of the container It should be made of wood or metal, with a minimum area of 1 cubic meter, or you can make it directly on the ground (it must have a lid). 3. Collection of materials Must have compost; ecological material (rich in nitrogen), fruit/vegetable leftovers, grass clippings, coffee/tea grounds, crushed egg shells, dried leaves, twigs/branches, cardboard/paper without ink and wood chips. 4. Layering The first layer will be branches and twigs to increase ventilation. The other layers will alternate between leaves/branches/coffee/tea and grass/fruits/vegetables/egg shells. 5. Maintenance of compost It should be turned every 1 to 2 weeks to keep it aerated and accelerate decomposition. It should always be moist, if it is dry add water, and if it is too wet add dry ingredients. If you have some large materials cut them up or shred them to speed up decomposition. 7. Composting time Depending on conditions and handling, compost will be ready in 2-6 months. Compost is ready when it has a dark color, earthy smell and the original ingredients are unrecognizable. And it is ready for use. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Water Retention

The table below compares the water retention capacity of soil with and without compost. Soil with compost retains significantly more water, enhancing plant growth and reducing the need for frequent watering.

Summary of Key Findings

Nutrient Enhancement: Compost significantly increases the levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the soil.Improved Water Retention: Soil with compost retains more water, providing a more consistent moisture level for plants. Enhanced Plant Growth: Plants in compost-treated soil show better growth, indicating improved overall soil health.

Conclution;

Benefits of Compost: Improves soil fertility and structure, promoting healthy plant growth. Applications: Use of compost in agriculture and gardening to improve sustainability and productivity. Future Research: Evaluate the impact in the long term and on different types of crops.
