Let's Practice!

We use might/may/could (not) + infinitive to say that something now or in the future is possible.

Modal verbs

We use must, might/may/could or can't + infinitive to speculate about situations in the present.
We can also use might/may/could + infinitive to say that a future situation or action is possible.
We can use must/may/could, might or can't + be + verb + -ing to speculate about activities in progress in the present and about temporary situations in the present.

Modal verbs

Use must, might/may/could or can't + have + past participle to speculate about the past.

Expressions for speculation

Bound/sure

Bound and sure are adjectives that are used to say that we are quite sure that something will be true or happen. We use them in the structure be bound/sure + to-infinitive..

Likely/unlikely

Likely and unlikely are adjectives. If something is likely to happen it means that it will probably happen or that it is expected to happen. If something is unlikely to happen it means that it probably won’t happen. We can use these two adjectives in two ways.

Definitely/probably

Definitely and probably go before the main verb and after the auxiliary verb (if there is one) in (+) sentences.
