Haunted house escape
A Literary pattern escape room
It is a dark and stormy night. As you stumble across the moors through the pouring rain, you come across a house. It doesn't look very inviting, but you figure it will at least be dry. You decide to try the door and find it swings open easily if creakily. You call out as you enter, but no one answers.
As you look around, you notice the place seems abandoned. You call out again, eyeing the dusty, cobweb-ridden room suspiciously. When you get no response other than the echo of your own voice, you take a few tentative steps inside. Oh no!!! The door slams shut behind you, and you whirl around to see who closed it. There's no one there. You assume it must be the wind, and reach to open the door to check if the wind has picked up. It's locked. You tug and twist the handle frantically, but it's no use. As you turn back to find a new way out, the house seems more foreboding than before. It's so dark. You gulp and gather your nerve, pulling out your keychain flashlight. There's no point hanging around the door. You need to find a way out. You see that there are four doors leading into other rooms. There's nothing left to do but take them one at a time, and hope one leads you out. The only way out is through.
Challenge 1
Select a door to search for an exit.
There is no exit, and the door slams and locks behind you. To find the key to go back, watch the video and select the most prominent element of a quest being demonstrated.

Real Reason to Go
You thought you saw something, but it turned out to be nothing. You decide to keep looking.
Success! You remembered that the real reason to go on a quest is always self-knowledge. You find a key with the letters "Th" on it. That seems important. You think you should put that in a note on your phone before you enter the next room. When you pull out your phone, you see that you have no service. Great, you think, no help is coming. Click the key to move forward.
Challenge 1
Select a door to search for an exit.
Challenge 2
The next room is empty aside from a locked box, sitting on a table in the middle of the room. The window has bars over it, so there's no way to escape. The door to the next room is locked, and there's no key in sight. You decide to search the box, but you need to figure out the combination. You hear creaking floorboards and ominous groaning. No one answered when you called, and you're suddenly afraid to call out again. The hair on the back of your neck stands up. Something's not right. You better hurry.

Challenge 1
The door led back to the hallway of doors! You turn and find, to your horror, that you've somehow come back through the same door you went in. Select a door to search for an exit.
Challenge 2
Challenge 3
The door opens into a furnished hallway that seems at odds with the sparsity of the rooms you've seen so far. There are tables, decorated with strangely creepy items, dead flowers, weird dolls, a skull. The part that bothers you, though, is the number of mirrors. They line the hall. Most are covered or broken, but there's one cluster of ornate mirrors that sends shivers down your spine. You can't put your finger on it, but something about them makes your skin crawl. Then you see that the reflection doesn't match the hallway. You inch closer to peer in the mirrors, wondering if they could possibly be paintings, when your face appears, your eyes scratched out like the family in the photos. You stifle a scream and nearly drop your flashlight. That's it. You need to get out. You rush to the end of the hallway, but there does not appear to be another door. You turn around, frantically, to go back the way you came, but all you see is an empty hall before you are plunged into darkness.
Drag the flashlight to find the door. Click the door to move forward.
Challenge 1
When the light was on the door, you saw "x2" carved into it, and you added it to your notes. The door led you back to the hallway of doors again! You turn and find, to your horror, that you've somehow come back through the same door you went in. Select a door to search for an exit.

Challenge 2
Challenge 3
The last door opens into a library that appears completely at odds with the darkness and creep factor of the rest of the house. You look around for a door, but there are none, not even the one you came through just now. You figure there has to be a way out, but if there isn't, at least you'll die surrounded by books. As your attention falls to the books, you wonder if the house has a hidden door behind the bookcase. As you wonder how on Earth you're going to figure out what book would be the secret lever, you remember the carvings in the keys. You pull the notes up in your phone.
Use your clues from the keys to find the title of the next novel we'll study, and click on the group of books containing that title.
You tug on a book, and it slides out easily. You thought there was going to be a hidden door. You better keep looking for a way out.
Th + air x 2! You tug on the copy of "There There" by Tommy Orange and jump back as the bookshelf swings open to reveal another dark hallway. You take a few steps before you hear a hoarse voice whisper directly into your ear, "Get out!" They don't have to tell you twice! You run to the end of the hallway and find rickety stairs leading up to the doors of a storm cellar. You shove against them, hoping they're not locked too, and, thank goodness, they burst open. You almost cry when the cold rain begins to soak you.
You flee from the house without looking back, so you don't see the silhouette of a woman standing in the open front door. You don't see the flash of lightning that illuminates her face, revealing the gaping black holes where her eyes should be.
