Nel 1923 Giacomo Balla (Torino, 1871 - Roma, 1958) dipinge l'opera che considera uno dei suoi più grandi capolavori, Pessimismo e Ottimismo. Qui l'artista è riuscito a sintetizzare la sua ricerca durata, più di cinque anni, dando forma allo scontro tra due forze che governano l'universo.
