To what extent does the language used in love island support the defecit model?

Professor Chris Evans Chairman Campaign to Undermine National Television

Our Purpose

Reality television programmes such as the so called 'Love Island' have left a stain on the monolith that is British national television. Our mission? To undermine the filth that occupies our screens and restore British television to its former glory!

Intro/Methodology

In order to carry out my presentation, I have transcribed 30 seconds of audio from two Love Island episodes and analysed the speech used by applying both Otto Jesperson and Robin Lakoff - two prevalent defecit model theorists. I chose the following: - Clip One: Megan and Wes - Clip Two: Laura and Wes Hypothesis - The speech in Love Island will align with that of the defecit model - an outdated linguistic theory reflective of a suppressive, anti-female society. It supresses females, perpetuates harmful stereotypes, and needs to be CANCELLED!

Applying Defecit Model Theory

Analysis Section One

Lakoff and Jesperson

Language and a Woman's Place (1975) - Robin Lakoff Outlined the following language features: - Backchanneling, hedging, intensifiers, apologies, tag questions, modal verbs, empty adjectives, wh- imperatives, indirect commands, diminutives, euphemisms, direct quotes, politeness and italicised speech. Language: Its Nature, Development and Origin (1922) In a chapter entitled Women he outlined: - Women talk a lot/have false starts as they don't think before they speak, exaggerate more, use too many adjectives/adverbs, are emotional rather than grammatical, and are more indiect.

Politeness and Not Shutting UP

Jesperson's theory in particular outlined the idea that women talk far too much, as they do not think before they speak. This was particularly embodied by the women of the Love Island, as they did not shut up and poor Wesley barely got a word in! The audacity... There were also instances of over politeness, a language feature outlined by Robin Lakoff, within Megan's transcripted speech. For the sake of all women, she needs to learn to stand up for her self and grow a pair!

If women do something like uptalk or vocal fry, it’s immediately interpreted as insecure, emotional, or even stupid. - Carmen Fought

Vocal Fry and Uptalk

Several Instances of vocal fry and uptalk were recorded throughout the transcript, with the most heavy usage coming from Megan (naughty girl...) - The Atlantic 2014 - Women who use vocal fry in job interviews are less likely to be hired - Naomi Wolf 2015 - Wrote an article for the Guardian encouraging young women to "give up the vocal fry and reclaim your strong female voice." I have contacted her several times for comment, as a fellow feminism, but have since received a restraining order from her attorney...

I Was Wrong: Love Island's Females and Dominance

Analysis Section Two

Dominance and Conversational Power

Applying an alternative interpretation of vocal fry: “Vocal fry, uptalk, and even like, are in fact not signs of ditziness, but instead all have a unique history and special social utility.” – Amanda Montell - Alternatively, women use vocal fry and uptalk to gain conversational power! Domiance Model: Zimmerman and West - 95% of interruptions are men - women's language is not in a defecit but is rather dominated by male speech. And yet, in the Love Island, women do all the talking! How feminism of them.

Conclusion

I was wrong, the Love Island is a great show and a feminism masterpiece. I now watch reruns of the show every night with my dog (because, for some reason, I still cannot get myself a female companion) Hashtag YesQueen, Hashtag Slay Photo credits for presentation Model: Prof. Chris (Alex) Evans Photographer: the wonderful Tilly Smith

Visual communication is a key tool. We find it easier to ‘read’ images than to read a written text. Disciplines such as ‘Visual Thinking’ facilitate the taking of visually rich notes through the use of images, graphs, infographics, and simple drawings.

Interactivity and animation can be your best allies when creating tables, infographics, or graphs that help provide context for the information and simplify the data in order to communicate it to your audience. We are visual beings and we find it easier to ‘read’ images than to read a written text.
