ORIGINS
The Olympic Games were born in Greece. The first edition was in 776 B.C. in the sacred city Olympia to honor Zeus.
They took place every 4 years.
THE MODERN ERA
After 1500 years of absence, the Olympic Games were revived in 1896 thanks to Pierre de Coubertin.
THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE (IOC)
In 1894, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established: it is composed of representatives of all participating nations
SYMBOLS AND TRADITIONS
The five intertwined circles
represent the five continents of the world: Africa, Asia, America, Europe and Oceania.
The Olympic flame
the flame is lit in Olympia and transported to the host city, symbolizes the spirit of peace and unity
The opening ceremony
The closing ceremony
THE FIRST PLACE MEDAL
The first Olympic gold medal was silver.
