Il nucleo originale di Pozzo Strada affonda le sue origini in epoca romana, essendo questa zona attraversata dalla strada che dalla Porta Segusina raggiungeva la Valle di Susa e le Gallie, e lungo la quale doveva già trovarsi una stazione di sosta (mansio) . Nel Medioevo (la prima attestazione risale al 1191) venne edificato, sotto il titolo di Santcum Sepulcrum de Puteo Stratae, un priorato gerosolimitano (dell’Ordine cavalleresco del Santo Sepolcro di Gerusalemme, fondato da Goffredo di Buglione) che comprendeva la chiesa romanica e un annesso ospizio per viaggiatori. A questo priorato è legata la vicenda di Jean Ravais, giovane cieco di Briançon, invitato in sogno dalla Vergine a ritrovare l’icona della Consolata andata dispersa. Giunto a Pozzo Strada ebbe la visione del luogo dove il quadro era stato nascosto (1104). Dell’edificio medievale rimane una scultura raffigurante una donna orante, oggi conservata nel Museo diocesano d’Arte sacra. Abbandonato dai gerosolimitani, il priorato fu ceduto ai monaci camaldolesi (1498). Alla fine del XVI sec. il convento conobbe la massima fioritura sotto il priorato del beato Alessandro da Garessio dei marchesi di Ceva. La chiesa di Pozzo Strada (in dial. Podestrà) venne distrutta durante l’assedio francese del 1706 e ricostruita nel corso dello stesso secolo. Prevalentemente rurali fino alla prima metà del XX sec., Pozzo Strada e le sue borgate satelliti Aeronautica e Borgata Lesna hanno ospitato alcune importanti industrie, prima fra tutte la Venchi Unica.

Il quartiere prende il nome dalle proprietà dei conti Olivero, che nel 1717 fecero edificare per i Gesuiti un vasto edificio per gli Esercizi Spirituali, trasformato nel XIX sec. in polveriera e demolito a metà del Novecento. La zona cominciò a popolarsi successivamente alla costruzione della chiesa di San Bernardino (arch. G. Gallo, 1891) e in seguito al Piano regolatore del 1901. Nella zona s’insediarono importanti industrie, tra i quali ricordiamo l’Itala, la SPA, la Lancia, la Chiribiri, le carrozzerie Bertone e Pininfarina, la Diatto, la Materferro, le Officine Meroni. La popolazione conobbe un notevole incremento demografico e nel territorio si manifestò una trasformazione edilizia che cancellò per sempre il precedente assetto rurale e le numerose cascine che lo caratterizzavano. La rilevante presenza operaia trasformò il borgo in una roccaforte del movimento socialista, che proprio qui maturò importanti esperienze politiche e sindacali fino al cosiddetto “biennio rosso” e alla presa del potere mussoliniana. Durante la dittatura in Borgo San Paolo non venne mai meno la coscienza antifascista, che culminò nella stagione resistenziale, a cui sono legate figure di primo piano quali Giambone, Capriolo e il giovane Di Nanni. In questo periodo qui si formò buona parte della classe politica del dopoguerra (Montagnana, Pajetta, Foa, Ravera, Negarville ecc.) Tra gli anni ’60 e la fine del secolo quasi tutte le fabbriche chiusero o si trasferirono fuori città e il quartiere conobbe un’incisiva trasformazione urbana e sociale.

In dialetto piemontese Cit Turin significa “Piccola Torino”, ed effettivamente tra la fine del XIX secolo e l’inizio del Novecento questo ampliamento del territorio cittadino era considerato una piccola città in miniatura, impostata (pur nella sua forma triangolare) sullo schema urbanistico ortogonale tipico del centro storico. Al centro del quartiere, in via Calmieri 39, sorge la parrocchiale dedicata a Gesù Nazareno, tipico esempio dell’eclettismo stilistico del suo autore, Giuseppe Gallo.Molte delle abitazioni che costituiscono il tessuto di Cit Turin costituiscono pregevoli esempi dell’arte liberty, e sono state progettate dai migliori architetti della scuola floreale torinese, da Pietro Fenoglio a Giovanni Gribodo, da Gottardo Gussoni al Vivarelli. La piazza su cui prospetta la chiesa costituisce il centro urbanistico del quartiere. Vi si ergeva, fino al dopoguerra, l’imponente mole della Casa benefica per giovani derelitti, opera filantropica per orfani e trovatelli, fondata dal benefattore Luigi Martini, a cui sono intitolati i prospicienti giardini (la piazza è ancor oggi comunemente chiamata dai torinesi “Piazza Benefica”). Ai margini di Cit Turin, nel periodo post-unitario, nacque un vero e proprio quartiere di grandi servizi: le Carceri “Nuove”, il Mattatoio, il Foro Boario, caserme e non molto distante il vecchio Ospedale Martini, poi trasferito a Pozzo Strada dopo la II Guerra mondiale. Attualmente la stessa zona ospita il Palazzo di Giustizia “Bruno Caccia” e il cantiere del grattacielo Intesa-Sanpaolo progettato da Renzo Piano.
