Cambodian Civil War (1967-1975)
Why did this start?
The cause of this conflict started in 1967 due to political instability, communist ideologies, and socio-economic disparities. There was conflict between the ruling government and the communist guerilla movement, and disgareements escalated and was further fueled by Cold War and US intervention. The civil war also started with a peasant uprising in rural Cambodia and ended with the assassination of the leader of the Khmer Rouge in 1975. The civil war started with the invasion of Cambodia by North Vietnam and ended with a peace treaty signed by all parties in 1975.
Goals of the nation
The goals of this nation during the war was that the Khmer Rouge's interpretation of Maoist communism drove them to create a classless society, simply by eliminating all social classes except for the 'old people' – poor peasants who worked the land. The Khmer Rouge claimed that they were creating 'Year Zero' through their extreme reconstruction methods. They sought to transform Cambodia into a radical agrarian communist society. This restructuring involved dissolving all elements of traditional Cambodian society.
Outcome of the war
The outcome of this war was that the war came to an abrupt end on April 17, 1975 with the Fall of Phnom Penh. This event caused the complete capitulation of the Lon Nol regime, officially known as the Khmer Republic. After its fall, the Khmer Rouge took power and initiated its policy of Year Zero. The Khmer Rouge was removed from power when communist Vietnam invaded in January 1979 and established a pro-Vietnamese regime in Cambodia. Many survivors fled to refugee camps in Thailand; of these, many went on to immigrate to the United States.
