Shark History & Evolution
Shark History & Evolution
They survived five massive planet extinction events
Possibly one of the most evolved sharks today are hammerhead sharks.
Sharks have evolved and changed much over millions of years.
These extinction events killed most life on earth
However many sharks today still share some of the features as sharks from millions of years ago.
They have an advanced sensory system and a body shape that has adapted to hunt specific prey.
Sharks and the Ocean
Sharks are APEX predators. At the top of the ocean food chain they directly impact all other marine species below them, maintaining a balance in the ecosystem.
Humans are the shark’s biggest predator, but killer whales, seals and even giant octopus have been known to eat sharks.
Sharks do not eat people. Sharks are attracted to their natural prey. When sharks do come into contact with humans it is usually by mistaken identity or the shark was investigating a possible meal
Larger sharks hunt in the middle depths and near the surface where they can more easily snatch larger prey such as seals.
Smaller sharks tend to feed near the ocean floor.
VS
The largest living shark in the world is the Whale Shark.
- There are 3 plankton feeding sharks in the world. They are the Whale Shark, the Basking Shark and the Megamouth Shark
- The smallest shark in the world is the Dwarf Lantern Shark he is around 8 inches long.
Do sharks sleep?
Shark species that do need to swim continuously to breathe go through a process known as sleep swimming, in which the shark is essentially unconscious.
- Although rare, a female shark can reproduce without any contact from a male. This is called parthenogenesis.
- Sharks do intrauterine cannibalism
- 1) Oviparity = laying eggs
2) viviparity = born alive & functional
3) ovoviviparity = Eggs hatch inside the adult female and sharks are born alive.
Shark Reproduction & Birth
- The gestation period for a pregnant female shark can range anywhere from five months to two years!
- A shark creates forward movement by moving its tail, which acts like a propeller. As the shark moves forward, water moves over its fins as though they were wings, creating lift.
How much food do they eat ?
Great whites.
Great white sharks eat 11 tons of food a year
Sharks can store food in their stomachs for months.
Can detect one drop of blood in 25 gallons of water and can sense tiny amounts of blood in the water from three miles away
Each of us eats closer to half a ton of food every year.
The epaulette shark can use its fins to walk, when the tide is too low to swim.
Nurse sharks are extremely lazy.
Sharks can be introverts or extroverts.
They spend most of their time resting on the sea floor and even stack up on top of each other.
A study was done that proved sharks have individual personalities.
