Recommended food
I've made a list of the best local food to eat when you're in York !
Wilfra apple cake
Parkin Cake
Yorkshire Pudding
One of Yorkshire's best-known desserts is the Wilfra apple cake. Made with the local cheese, Wensleydale , it used to be made in the small town of Ripon on St. Wilfrid's Day (the first or second Saturday in August), to commemorate the saint's return to his home town after a long absence abroad. The people of Ripon would bake dozens of Wilfra tarts, which are actually small cheesecakes.
Parkin is a cake with a delicate gingerbread flavour. It has several characteristics that set it apart from traditional gingerbread. Firstly, the high proportion of golden syrup (a thick sugar syrup) and melasse gives it a rich, melting and slightly sticky texture. The other original feature is the presence of oats!
Yorkshire pudding isn't a dessert !Made from milk, eggs, flour and salt, it traditionally accompanies the main dish . Yorkshire pudding goes well with roast beef, chicken and, more generally, any dish with sauce.
