Saladin Al-Ayubi (The Lion of Islam):
Saladin AL-Ayubi was born in 1138 in Tikrit in what is now Iraq and died on 4 March 1193 in Damascus in Syria at the age of 55. He was one of the most famous sultans of the Muslim Middle Ages. His popularity was mainly due to the ‘holy war’ he fought against the ‘Franks’ who had been established in Syria-Palestine since the crusade of 1097-1099. A champion of the counter-crusade, it was he who recaptured Jerusalem in the name of Islam in 1187 and fought against the third crusade between 1190 and 1192.
