Paintings from an Andean Imaginary

Pierre Bourdieu affirms that there exists in the artistic world a resistance or opposition to the way of understanding and being in everyday life. He shows a separation similar to that which can be perceived between the sacred and the profane. This sociologist proposes that social conflict is not only between social classes. His work, supported by a sociological analysis of the mechanisms of social reproduction, emphasizes the importance of cultural and symbolic capital in this reproduction and criticizes the importance given to economic factors. It is the set of current work of the Arequipa painter Juan Raúl Machaca de Aquino, which makes me perceive that he is situated in that field of signifiers that transits between reality and dream, between tradition and play, history and imagination. He lives today between the atavistic myths of his community and reality. The exercise of transmuting images from the real everyday object to that zoomorphic or anthropomorphic presence, full of color and strength. The apparent duplicity or multiplicity of its characters, hidden in all possible coloration and brilliance, make evil and benign characters of the Puno festival and mythology lovable to us; I think of the Karishiri, the Jarjacha, the Ukuku, or the Muki to mention a few. Machaca de Aquino plays with his brushes and crayons between the enormous richness of the Andean worldview and imaginary, the contemporary imaginary and present reality, which, if we observe it closely, looks just as playful as the plethora of 'characters' that inhabit his painting. His colors thin the distance between magic and atavistic fear that ancestral myths often draw for us, just as communicational exercises of power do today. The presence of the vernacular in the humanized zoo of his painting transmits to us the deep and diverse richness of the Andean people, so unknown to contemporary Western life.

The imagination of a community is made up of a set of facts, memories, and dreams that make sense of its history and present. The symbolic practices that are part of the existence of the human being, timeless in their psychosocial exercise, are related by its people, its ancients: the actual events and the magical ones, with the blurring and coloring that we usually see in American vernacular culture. The set of material and mental gestures that constitute the creative and cultural space is considered the imaginary of art. There is undoubtedly a certain homology in this imagination with religious systems, their rituals, and their demonology. Lévi-Strauss says, "Myth is language, but language that operates at a very high level." Myth constitutes a third language level, as it connects language and speech. He says that to know a community, you have to look at the mental structures of the individuals in that society, what Durkheim called collective thought, but Saussure, with his postulation on the arbitrary character of linguistic signs, is the one who will shake this illusion; establishing the differences between language and speech. The visual signs of Machaca de Aquino and her ancestral references amalgamate reality, mythology, and poetry. For Mircea Eliade, myth is "A sacred reality." It is an image of the past and an instrument that human beings continually use to perceive the sacred, maintaining that mythical thought is characterized by the “terror of history.” Archaic man does not accept the historicity of events and emphasizes that myth constitutes the interpretation of acts producing supernatural beings and a history considered authentic and sacred.
