Created on May 15, 2024
The Drop Caps and Nested Styles tab allows you to add a little flair and structure to your text. We primarily use this tab for the Nested Styles feature, which automates the sequence of our paragraph styles.

Nested Styles: Drop Down Menus
The first drop down will display all character styles currently in the document. There's also an option at the very bottom to create a new style directly from this dialogue box.
By using nested styles, you can automatically apply character styles to specific parts of a paragraph, such as resume names, project names, or other elements, based on patterns in the text. This is a huge time saver and helps us stay consistent without having to think about it! In the panel, you can define the rules for the nested styles, such as the character or word that triggers the style change, the style to apply, and the number of characters or words affected. Common examples can be seen to the left.
The second drop down gives you two options: through and up to.
The third option gives you a handful of default options, but you can also type in this box (i.e. "," or "|")
Nested Styles: Explained
By using nested styles, you can automatically apply character styles to specific parts of a paragraph, such as resume names, project names, or other elements, based on patterns in the text. This is a huge time saver and helps us stay consistent without having to think about it! In the panel, you can define the rules for the nested styles, such as the character or word that triggers the style change, the style to apply, and the number of characters or words affected. Common examples can be seen to the left.
Nested Styles: Multiple
Explore using multiple nested styles on one paragraph by adding a "New Nested Style" and selecting desired settings. In this example, the base settings for Resume: Name are - Bold Character Color: Blue.
Nested Line Styles: Drop Down Menus
By using nested line styles, you can automatically apply character styles to specific lines in a paragraph. Multiple nested line styles would be used if you want to apply a different character style to the first line of each paragraph or to every third line within a paragraph. This isn't typical for us, but feasible options may exist if you want to explore them.
