Update from the Head

Summer has now really arrived at Ampleforth - everyone enjoyed a gloriously sunny day for our Open Morning last Saturday - what better way to experience a glimpse of life here in the Valley - and again, we ran out of plates for lunch, such was the volume of visitors! Our sports players were out and about in the sun at the weekend. The U18A Girls and U15A Boys Tennis saw wins against Pocklington and the Mixed U18 Golfers took a win against Stonyhurst. On Sunday we had the annual Colour Run, always one of the big fun events and good for our fund-raising efforts. This week has been about reconnecting with the strong Ampleforth base in Hong Kong. It was a joint Abbey-College expedition and was a great success, meeting up with friends old and new. Harriet, Emma, Fr Wulstan and I have been spending time and friendship with prospective families, agents, current and past parents and Old Amplefordians. Good to shake off the effects of Covid.

Next year's Head Monitors were announced at Assembly to thunderous applause. Many congratulations to Isadora and Finbar who take on the role of Head Monitors and to Anastasia and Humphrey who will be Deputy Heads. I am told that our outgoing Head Monitors spoke eloquently as they announced the new appointments. Josie said: "I would like to take a moment to say how incredibly proud I am of our progress since September. I am so grateful to all of you for working together to build and strengthen our community." Seamus followed up with some solid advice for the incoming Heads of School: "You now have an enhanced responsibility to serve this school...I warn you that the greatest mistake that could be made during your tenure is complacency. Do not allow the short time that you have in this role slip away from you. The role will demand effort and dedication, but the most rewarding part is that you can see first hand the progress that the school is making."

Update from the Head

This week we welcomed students from Aysgarth School for a Robots and Rockets Day - by the looks on their faces in the photos in this week's College news, they certainly had a great day building and launching their own water powered rockets and using coding schools to create and race egglympic robots! Tomorrow morning, 45 Year 12 students and members of staff (including Marie!) will depart for The Big Walk - a gruelling 78km walk in 24 hours from Whitby Abbey back to the College to raise funds for Oakfield School in Nottingham, a school for children with physical and/or learning difficulties. They will be arriving back as Mass finishes on Sunday morning - do join us to welcome them home after this impressive challenge and donate here if you can: On Sunday, students in Year 9 will set off to the First World War Battlefields in Belgium and Northern France. This is a compelling way to appreciate the impact of the First World War and an opportunity to remember the 63 Old Amplefordians who lost their lives and to visit some of their graves. I wish Year 9 safe travels and look forward to seeing many of you on Sunday morning to welcome back the Big Walkers. All best wishes, Peter

Head Monitors

Congratulations to Isadora and Finbar who were announced as next year’s Head Monitors at Assembly yesterday and to Anastasia and Humphrey who were declared Deputy Head Monitors – a huge achievement for them – well done!

Leeds Half Marathon

On Sunday 12 May, newly appointed Head Monitor, Finbar, ran the Leeds Half Marathon for the first time to raise funds for FACE-FAW supporting causes such as St George's Crypt who support the homeless. Well done Finbar! There's still time to donate here:

More Equestrian Success

Congratulations to Olivia and Elizabeth who both made their One Day Event debut’s for Ampleforth at the weekend at the NSEA Epworth ODE. Both jumped double clears and finished on their dressage scores, and both qualified for the Finals in Dorset in October.

Robots & Rockets

It was wonderful to welcome students from Aysgarth School for an action-packed STEM day! Students spent the day building and launching their own water powered rockets and used coding skills to create and race egglympic robots! They were also privileged to meet students from the Leeds University Rocketry Association who brought along their own rocket ‘Gryphon II’, a supersonic, high-powered rocket, and enjoyed a demonstration from the Ampleforth College Rocket Club of their rocket, which will be competing in the UKRoC National Final at the end of June - wishing them the best of luck!

U14 England Hockey

Well done to Freddie & Orlando for representing Thirsk HC and Emily who played for York HC at the England Hockey U14 Supra League Finals (Tier 1 National finals) at Nottingham University!

Message from Mrs Dent

The big news of the week was the announcement on Tuesday, that our very own Dora has been appointed as Head of School for the coming academic year. It goes without saying that the whole House is over the moon and we know that she will serve the school brilliantly in the position. Exhibition weekend marks the official handover of duties from the outgoing Heads of School and I know that you will all join with us in offering Dora your personal congratulations when you see her. It's been a heavy week of examinations this week and the girls have been amazing at keeping cool heads and calmly supporting each other. GCSE students are almost half way through now and A levels are getting underway - there's a real atmosphere of purpose and drive in the House. Pizza Wednesdays are prooving (parden the pun) to be a hit, with Years 9 and 13 getting together over slices of margerita and pepperoni pizza, as a welcome treat and breather from revision and prep. Nine of our Year 12 students are gearing up for the Big Walk this weekend, where they'll be walking the 78km from Whitby to Ampleforth overnight across the North York Moors. Myself, Mr Hudson and Mrs Wallington (Year 12 Tutors) will be walking alongside - it is a great privilege to be accompanying the girls in this challenge - I have a feeling that we will learn much about overselves and each other in the process. We're looking forward to welcoming you all to the valley for Exhibition next weekend.

Mrs Ceri Dent, St Aidan's Housemistress

Birthdays

It's been a week of 18th Birthdays, including a double for Emma and Clara last Friday and Sasha's yesterday. It's not the easiest to turn 18 in the midst of A level examinations, but we managed some quality time together between the twilight revision sessions and library study. What a difference a year makes!

In other news....

The Colour Dash last weekend provided the opportunity for the girls to let off steam on a lovely sunny day. It's a firm favourite in the yearly calendar and this time didn't disappoint.

It's blister plasters at the ready for the Big Walk tomorrow - this picture from last year's walk. The girls have been fueling over the past few day in readiness for the challenge. What a unique opportunity, with apprehension and excitement in equal measure. Look out for live updates via our social media pages over the weekend.

In other news....

The garden is really coming into it's own, cocooned by an incredible display of summer foliage in the surrounding woodland and orchards - we're so fortunate to have this space. Last weekend, it was lovely to host St Bede's for our Sunday barbeque. With visitors from other Houses too, it's the perfect time to relax and catch up with friends.

Shaping our House Community

With decisions over next year's school monitors imminent, this is a special time of year, where we not only reflect on the highs and achievements of the past three terms, but begin to look ahead to the coming academic year and the ways in which we can develop our House community and ethos to be even more special. We started important work in this regard back in October, where the theme of our House Retreat, 'A life well lived', allowed us to focus on what we collectively valued about House life. At this time, the girls came up with a range of great ideas upon which we have an ongoing focus. The appointment of Head and Deputy Heads of House over the coming days marks an important point of the year and we are now encouraging all girls in the House to think about how they might also contribute to our shared life together. For the academic year 2024-25, we'll be developing leadership and collaborative opportunites at all levels, for girls in all year groups. This week, the girls have been invited to start thinking about areas of our House life they can see themselves contributing to particularly. Watch this space in the coming weeks for news of forwarding planning led by our incoming monitor team.

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.

Dear Parents, St Bede's House has settled well into exam fever and slowly preparing for the festivities of Exhibition. Happy smiley people in Year 9 heading off to the Battlefields with our lovley tutor Miriam Cook.. Year 10s enjoyed a contemplative encounter with the nuns at Stanbrook Abbey. Year 12s have been helping with deaneries and starting to think about University open days for applications next year. Any questions about Exhibition, please feel free to contact the House team.

Birthday Week

In a week full of birthdays, some celebrated by completing GCSE examinations, it has been wonderful to see the boys celebrate together. It is testament to their ever-growing friendships that they enjoy being part of each other's significant events like this. It is true to say that the family in St CT's is one that rally around one another, being there in all circumstances and this is a key benefit of boarding. Especially when these circumstances involve cake!
We have had a busy spiritual week too, with two masses in the Abbey Church. It has been lovely to share this time with St Margaret's House. The theme of sharing our time, being hospitable, is one that runs through the week. We have hosted pupils from all Houses across campus for socials this week and we are looking forward to a Year 10 social on Saturday too. Having an open door and welcoming environment is a key part of making the House feel like a home and I am sure that the lovely socials we have enjoyed this week prove that we are good hosts. The coming weekend and Exhibition, will give us the opportunity to open our doors to you all and I hope you will get a feel of a happy, homely, welcoming House where the boys are thriving. We all look forward to seeing you there!

We decided to include some more healthy options for our deli nights. Roasted red pepper hummus with carrots, cucumber and celery, plus olives for example.

Message from the Housemaster

The excitement is building ahead of next week's Exhibition. I know that the pupils are looking forward to hosting you in House. You may see some previews of further decorations provided by some of our in-House artists. We were blessed with wonderful weather for the Open Morning and it was lovely to meet prospective parents and pupils. The Pipers were, yet again, fantastic in welcoming all to the Valley, and Agnes, Barty, Ellie and Tom have been excellent hosts, whether giving tours of the school or speaking about their time in Junior House and Year 7 and 8.

I was very proud to see EW's representatives in a variety of teams on Saturday and Sunday, as well as in the Green Room, where they are hard at work ahead of the performance of The Wizard of Oz. I highly recommend you try to take this in as part of next weekend. Productions in our very distinguished Theatre really are special. I wish you safe journeys next weekend and look forward to seeing you.

Cricket Report

Many of the girls played their first hard ball game last Saturday against Dame Allan's U14s. We adjusted well to the slightly different bounce and Ellie batted brilliantly. Agnes then took five wickets in a terrifyingly quick spell of fast bowling. Both her and Willow were selected to play in the U15A team this week. The boys made progress with both the bat and ball in their matches and nearly snuck a victory against Aysgarth. Arthur's contribution (46) of nearly half our runs was an impressive knock. Plenty more coming up next week and tennis fixtures after half-term. The B team, with 9 of them playing their first game, were outstanding in winning their first match of the season, ably skippered by Ben.

Other sports

Last month, Willow had a fabulous day representing City of York U13s at Leeds - she won all her individual events; the hurdles, the high jump with a PB of 1m30 and also won the javelin. Her team came second in the relay and York won the event. More recently, Willow competed in her first pentathlon and has already earned a spot in UK’s top ten u13 pentathletes, achieving PBs in each of the 5 events. Willow is also in the top ten for hurdles with only two races under her belt.

Well done Landi, who was busy playing hockey at the National Finals on Sunday with the Thirsk U14s!

Message from the Housemaster

Dear Parents and Guardians, This time, next week, you will be joining us for Exhibition and we are so excited by this. Please make note of the plans that have been shared with you in this week's College newsletter and in those from previous weeks. It is sure to be an excellent event. With public examinations taking centre stage this week, it is true to say that the Year 11s and 13s have been applying themselves admirably. The House has responded in kind, with a quiet and industrious environment here of an evening. The House wishes those students all the best; many an evening bidding prayer is dedicated to the Remove and Upper Sixth who are intent on putting their best foot forward. Year 12 student, Humphrey (right), has been asked to serve the College as Deputy Headmonitor. Humphrey is a great contributor to school life, busy in all corners of theCollege: music (he plays saxophone and piano), Schola Cantorum, sport, (Rugby,Football and Athletics) and more. He studies Politics, Music and English Literature. Please introduce yourself to him at Exhibition, if you can. Best wishes for the weekend. Mr Dan MacDonald Housemaster, St Hugh's House

Message from Ms Paterson

Dear Parents This week started with the Colour Run on Sunday. It was good to see some of the exam girls enjoy themselves for half an hour as a bit of a stress reliever. Years 9, 10 and 12 went to reconciliation in the Abbey and we celebrated House Mass there on Thursday with St Cuthbert's and Thomas’, again allowing exam girls the time to relax or study in the evening. The girls have created a calm yet focused atmosphere in House. It's good to see that, in a time where the poor mental health and anxiety is on the increase, the girls of St Margaret’s buck the trend. Year 13 show their maturity and manage their time incredibly well. Whilst Year 11 are inexperienced in taking public exams, they have really done well to be constantly engaged with ongoing exam lessons and their own private study. They are an absolute credit. Trips out this week included Mrs Carter taking Year 10 girls to Stanbrook Abbey for a retreat. Ursula and Alice in Year 10 joined the trip - the girls said it was an amazing experience and it was great to be in the company of Sister Julian who led the activities. Next week many Year 9 girls will go on the Battlefields trip - we look forward to hearing about their adventures. Many of the CCF girls have been getting up to attend Exhibition practice at 7.15am every morning from now until Exhibition. This is sterling work from these girls, showing commitment and fortitude in the face of tiredness! Alongside this, are girls practicing in the play almost every spare minute of the day. Well done to these girls as well! In the lead up to Exhibition, Moragh has been relaxing and hardly doing anything to prepare for it. Everything you see next weekend will be down to my hard work…….(Please do not tell Moragh I have said this). Look forward to seeing you then!! Rebecca
