The dreamcatcher symbolizes the dreams that Hassana and Husseina exchanged back and forth to each other. While most of them were unclear and confusing for the other to understand, Hassana and Husseina used them to locate their other half.
The compass is a symbol of guidance for the twins in this book. During some points in the story Hassana and Husseina were far apart from each other, but used all they could to be connected.
The dove symbolizes fate and protection for different cultures. Fate led Hassana and Husseina back together after a difficult journey.
The symbol of a ship shows the twin’s voyages through many places and unity after finding each other. This ship could also represent their loyalty to one another and how they would both go through any obstacles to be connected with each other.
The cross symbolizes Husseina‘s faith. Through her travels of trying to find her twin, she spent much time not only worshiping certain gods, but creating and inventing new things that she thought would benefit not only her faith, but other’s as well.
Chains represent slavery in The Deep Blue Between. While this was a horrible thing that both sisters had to experience, it was a huge part of their stories.
The song that I chose for this book is the Diseny song “When You Wish Upon a Star.” I chose this because in it, it talks about fate and wishing on everything, just like how Hassana and Husseina dreamed about one another often.
Attah expresses the theme of loyalty in The Deep Blue Between. Loyalty is having faith in something that is uncertain and not guaranteed, just like how Hassana and Husseina believed that they would be able to find the other even with little information and knowledge. They both struggled along the way dealing with extreme hardships that were discouraging. Since they were loyal to finding a solution to this conflict, they found their other half.
