Nathaniel Philbrick employs foreshadowing, he gives hints of events to come creating an anticipation in the book. For example "In the days leading up to their departure, ominous signs seemed to abound. The weather grew increasingly unsettled, with dark clouds gathering on the horizon and the wind howling like a mournful specter”

Nathniel Philbrick uses metaphors to create a deeper understanding of the events depicted in the book he compares the whales attack to that of a supernatural disaster. These metaphors enhance the book because you can create a deeper depiction of the book. For example “In that moment, they knew they were facing not just a beast of the sea, but a force of nature unleashed.”

Nathaniel Philbrick uses imagery throughout the book to create a sense of realism. Describing the ocean, sailors struggles and whacking processes for example “The sea stretched out before them like a vast expanse of liquid eternity, its surface shimmering under the glare of the sun. Waves rose and fell in rhythmic undulations”

“Among them were sons of wealthy merchants and aristocrats, seeking to prove their mettle in the world of whaling, as well as sons of humble fishermen and laborers, drawn to the sea by necessity rather than choice” The passage provides evidence to the economic diversity among the crew members of the Essex, which first introduces this social issue by explaining there’s many economic diversity in the world.

"As they clung to life amidst the wreckage of the Essex, the crew members found themselves bound together by a common struggle. Hunger and thirst knew no distinction of class, and the harsh realities of their situation forced them to set aside their differences and work together for their mutual survival.” The passage emphasizes how wealth and social and economic status doesn’t matter when in front of death, the crew members start to value each other more and don’t see each other for their status but they see each other as brothers. This is a resolution because they don’t believe in socioeconomic status anymore.

“ The sons of wealthy merchants toiled alongside the sons of humble fishermen, their shared struggle In the face of death, they were no longer defined by their wealth or status, but by their collective will to endure." The passage is evidence for how the climax of this social issue is when every economic status is struggling to survive and share a sense of unity for a common goal of survival.
