The theatre of absurd

Waiting for Godot is the most popular play written by Samuel Beckett, an important representative of the Theatre of Absurd

lWhere is it from?

These playwrights were inspired by Albert Camus's definition of the absurd in his 1942 essay "The Myth of Sisyphus".

The allegory of life:

life is essentially deprived of intrinsic meaning and human beings are forced to confront this unavoidable reality

What is absurdism?

Absurdity is the view of existentialist philosophers that human existence in this universe is ambiguous and chaotic.

In absurdity, no meaning exists in this universe for man, but it is the man himself who has to search for the meaning.

  • nothing is happening
  • it is based on short dialogues without meaning
  • The character talks but doesn't communicate
  • There is a mix of comedy and tragedy to enlighten the atmosphere
  • We don't know the time, there isn't past, present or future
  • there is a circular strucure
  • Language is simple and repetitive, it looses its meaning
