A REVENGE TRAGEDY

Tragedies, originating from Greek plays, were shaped by Seneca's rules for revenge tragedies. They typically involve a sexual or violent crime against a family member, with the perpetrator escaping punishment by legal or institutional means. The hero embarks on a journey of revenge, facing doubt and engaging in intricate planning. Key elements include the presence of a ghost, intimate connection with the audience through soliloquies, and moral isolation leading to potential madness. Shakespeare's "Hamlet" adheres to these conventions while delving into psychological depth, exploring the hero's introspection, relationships, and uncertainties.

Additionally, these revenge tragedies, like Shakespeare's Hamlet, delve into the complex psychology of the hero, exploring themes of existential angst and moral ambiguity.

THamlet's verbosity surpasses that of all other Shakespearean characters, emphasizing his talkative nature. His language is defined by its ambiguity, expressed through metaphor, simile, and wordplay. Each word he utters carries a concealed meaning, reflecting the complexity of his emotions and the ambiguity of the feelings that drive him.

Throughout the play, Hamlet voices his dissatisfaction with the roles he must assume. He resents being cast as the reluctant avenger in a revenge-driven narrative, the uncertain heir to the throne, the hesitant lover of the heroine, and the conflicted son to his ambiguous father figure. His complaints underscore his internal conflict and existential dilemmas.

HAMLET'S LANGUAGE

a reluctant avenger

Hamlet's failure to promptly avenge his father's murder until the final act is often attributed by critics to his habitual procrastination. He struggles with his inability to act swiftly, citing a form of depression, termed 'melancholy' in Shakespeare's era, as a contributing factor. The shock of his father's death and his mother's hasty remarriage exacerbates his melancholy, altering his perception of life, love, and the state. Hamlet perceives a pervasive disease infecting both individuals and society, reflecting his rejection of a corrupt and unjust world. Shakespeare portrays Hamlet's eventual act of revenge as impulsive and driven by anger rather than calculated justice.

themes..

Hamlet could be read simply as a revenge tragedy. However, Shakespeare also develops a series of themes that are central to humanity, such as family and love relationships, madness, action and inaction, the corruption linked to power, the existence of God, life after death, and the meaning of the theatre itself. A major question is the relation between 'appearance and reality': how does one separate what appears to be real or absolute from what actually is so?

Truth seems to be in the 'existential idea' that the only truth that individual man knows is that he exists. Another important theme is 'honour'.
