1. Be Open and Constructive

Encourage an atmosphere of openness and constructive feedback during the wash-up. Create a safe space where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas. Stay respectful in all communications, even if there are differing opinions or critiques.

2. Leave Tech Behind

To minimise distractions and foster genuine engagement, consider leaving technology behind during the wash-up. Ask participants to put away their phones, laptops, and other devices, unless there are specific reasons (such as learning styles or accessibility needs) that require their use. This allows for more focused and meaningful discussions.

3. Send Out Points and Questions Ahead of Time

To maximize the efficiency of the wash-up, send out a list of key points and questions to all participants ahead of time. This gives everyone a chance to reflect on the pitch, gather their thoughts, and come prepared with ideas and feedback. Consider using a shared document where everyone can contribute and collaborate.

4. Identify a Clear Leader

Designate a clear leader for the wash-up who will be responsible for setting the agenda, facilitating the discussion, and keeping things on track. This person should have a good understanding of the project goals, the pitch content, and the desired outcomes of the wash-up. They should be able to guide the conversation, ensure equal participation, and keep the discussion focused and productive.

5. Ensure Equal Participation

Make sure that everyone has an opportunity to contribute during the wash-up. Encourage active listening and create space for all voices to be heard. If someone seems hesitant to speak up, gently invite them to share their thoughts. Be mindful of power dynamics and ensure that no one dominates the conversation at the expense of others.

6. Create an Action Plan

One of the key outputs of the wash-up should be a clear action plan. This plan should outline the specific steps that need to be taken, who is responsible for each task, and the associated deadlines. Be sure to check for understanding and agreement among all participants. Document the action plan and distribute it to everyone involved for reference and accountability.

7. Follow Up

The wash-up is not the end of the process. It's crucial to follow up on the action items and commitments made during the discussion. Regularly check in with team members and stakeholders to ensure that progress is being made and that any obstacles are being addressed. Celebrate successes along the way and keep everyone informed of the project's status.
