Our Purpose.
Title 1
We Make History.
Our Founders.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® (ΑΚΑ) is the first intercollegiate historically African American sorority. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at the historically black Howard University in Washington, D.C and later became a perpetual entity following incorporation on January 29, 1913. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African American women in areas where they had minimal control or influence because opportunities for minorities and women were scarce during the early 1900s. Alpha Kappa Alpha is part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)
Our 20 founders were among the fewer than 1,000 African Americans enrolled in higher education institutions in 1908, and of the 25 women who received Bachelor of Arts degrees from Howard University between 1908 and 1911.

Under the 2022-2026 administration, themed "Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood," our sorority aims to amplify our legacy of service by mobilizing its 120,000+ members. Every chapter, both national and international will continue to lead in realms of change, education, and advocacy through six initiatives.
CURRENT INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS.
Since 1908, service and sisterhood have been the heart of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.
"Strengthen Our Sisterhood" forms the foundational effort, by fostering our bonds to bolster our service missions. The remaining five "Program Initiatives"—Empower Our Families, Build Our Economic Wealth, Enhance Our Environment, Advocate for Social Justice, and Uplift Our Local Community—are designed to enhance the lives of those we serve while collaborating to maximize outreach and nurture service-focused leaders.
