Fondational Theories

"DT is grounded in psychological theories of creativity, visual thinking, and human values" (Auernhammer & Roth, 2021, p. 637).

Strengths
The many proponets of the Design Thinking Model consider it to be flexible and applicable to almost any problem. It's human centered approach leads to successful outcomes and pushes the purpose of design beyond product development or asthetic. (Dam & Siang, 2024).
Criticisim

"We question the notion that DT is a construct that can be “used” or “implemented” through a step- by- step process and tools" Auernhammer & Roth, 2021, p. 638). The Design Thinking Model is often times combined with other design models, sparking the debate, is this a design model or a mindset? (IDEO, 2024).

Design Thinking Model

Design Thinking has evolved to encompass a humanistic and solutions orietned approach to design. With the "user" at the center of the process, designers work to identify a possble soultion to challenging & broad problems by utilizing a 5 step iterative process (Dam & Siang, 2024).

5 Steps:

  • Empathize
  • Define
  • Ideate
  • Prototype
  • Test

Mindset Shift

Given our institutions current contracts and the ratio of adjunct to fulltime faculty, there would not be compensation outside of current work duties.

The iteratrive process takes time, monitoring, and follow up. Ensuring design teams have enough time to fully commit to this model would need to be supported by admin

Institutionallythere are a lot of moving parts, different opinions, perspectives, and mindsets about how to operate. Committees or design groups will need to buy into the Design Thinking Model to be effective

In her Tedx Talk, Design Thinking for Complex Environments, Nilufer Erebil provides real world context for how the Design Thinking Model can be implemented to tackle both concrete and illdefined design challenges. With her example of something as simple as a shower faucet, consider how utilizing a user centered approach can be beneficial across industries, environments, and cutlures.

David Kelley

The phrase Design Thinking was first used by Herbert A Simon in 1969, (Serrat, 2017, p. 130). Since then the model has been championed by Stanford's D School, and Design Company IDEO, both of which David Kelley is a founding member (Auernhammer & Roth, 2021, p. 624). David and his collegues at IDEO continue to promote the theory to tackle "wicked problems" (Dam & Siang, 2024).

Possible problems that could be tackled utilizing Design Thinking

Building student motivation in a changeing educational landscape

Building deeper connection between the insitution an the larger community

Increase student utilization of campus outdoor space i.e the beach and greens

Streamlining mental health support on campus

Establishing stronger connections between departments to maximize assets

Establish a stronger connection between the two campus locations

"The process is firmly based on how you can generate a holistic and empathic understanding of the problems people face. Design thinking involves ambiguous, and inherently subjective, concepts such as emotions, needs, motivations and drivers of behavior" - (Dam & Siang, 2024).
UBER EATS an example of Design Thinking in action
  • Started with empathy for users and sought to understand the food culture of different cities by visiting & exploring
  • Defined the problem of how to create an app that addresses unique needs based on location
  • Utilized customer fedback and fieldtesting to ideate and test app fatures out in the filed
  • Developed multiple prototypes of the app and conitue to update and test features (IDEO U, 2024).
TRIO Student Space
  • Empathize: What does a sense of belonging look like and feel like for our students?
  • Define: Improve community and redefine program culture post-pandemic
  • Ideate: Student interviews, observation, caseload data, coach impressions
  • Prototype: Events >Field Trips > Student Space
  • Test: After testing a few different "prototypes" we decided to build a student study space to address both culture and academics. We needed to develop a "home base" for community to evolve organically.
  • We continue to ideate> prototype> and test to ensure the space is meeting students needs
