Planting Happy Trees
An intro to successfully planting trees in Texas.
By The end of Today, You will
- know how to prep the tree area.
- be comfortable handling the tree and placing it in the designated spot.
- know the best technique for backfilling the soil and mulching
- know the best way to care for your new tree!
Prepping the Site
Picking & Prepping The Site
Location - surface
The hole
Location - above
Comparing with the current container your tree is in; dig a hole to the depth of the soil line in the pot and 2-3 times wider.
Choose a location that is at least 10 feet away from your foundation. Watch out for sprinkler system and ultility lines. (call 811)
Google the average height of the tree species and make sure it will not grow up into powerlines.
Adding the Tree & BAckfill
Only pickup the tree by the bottom of the container or root ball. Place the tree in the middle of the prepared site. Locate the first lateral root or root flare (the dirt should be added to a level directly below). Backfill the soil by adding a layer of soil and then gently tapping it down. Keep a circular trench around the trunk to help direct water to the roots
No need to fertilize during the first year. :)
Mulch & Watering
Mulch - Add 3-4 inches of mulch onto the exposed soil. Do NOT add mulch directly near the trunk. Water - if the tree is a Texas native or adapted to this area, provide an initial good soak after planting and then water once a week (maybe twice during the summer) for the first year. Aim for about 5-10 gallons for each watering
