How to build your bottle ecosystem:

Choose one of the two options. Click the plus sign for the instructions for each.

Determine which group you are in.

Group B-Uncovered Ecosystem: Students with last names starting with K-Z

Group A-Covered Ecosystem: Students with last names starting with A-J

OPTION 1: Live Bottle Ecosystem (recommended)

OPTION 2: Virtual Bottle Ecosystem

This video goes over how to make one.

Put your bottle ecosytem in an indoor location where it can receive sunlight. You will collect data from it over the next few weeks.

Submit a photo/video or the link to your bottle ecosystem.

Make a hypothesis

In this step of the scientific method, you form a testable statement that attempts to answer the question we are investigating. For example, "An uncovered ecosystem will have faster seed germination and growth rates" or "Seed germination and growth rates will not be affected by whether or not the bottle ecosystems are covered." It is ok for your hypothesis to be incorrect in the end. Think of it as an educated guess! You will not actually turn your hypothesis in anywhere.

Conclusion

You will be able to answer the original question "Will covering a bottle ecosystem influence seed germination rate and growth?" and give evidence and reasoning to explain your answer to the question.

Design your experiment

Every science experiment has variables. Variables are anything that can change or be changed within an experiment. In this experiment, the independent variable (the thing we are going to change) is the top of the bottle ecosystem. Half of the class will cover their bottle ecosystems (Group A) and the other half will leave it open (Group B). The group you are in will be determined by the first letter of your last name. The dependent variable (the thing we are measuring) will be the height of the plants in centimeters. We will also be tracking the temperature of the inside of the ecosystem, in Celsius, to see if that is affected as well.

Conclusion

Identify a problem or ask a question

The question our class will be answering is "Will covering a bottle ecosystem influence seed germination rate and growth?"

Record and analyze data

For the next 4 weeks, you will record your observations of your bottle ecosystem and submit them each week. Keep your ecosystem in an environment above 60 degrees Fahrenheit and be sure it receives sunlight daily. Be sure to record the temperature and height of the plants each week. You can take pictures for observations or write a description. If you are doing the virtual ecosystem, pictures will be available next week for you to get your observations from. After the 4 weeks, all of our data will be compiled so we can compare the growth of the plants in Group A's covered ecosystems versus Group B's uncovered ecosystems.

Option 1: Live Bottle Ecostem (recommended)

Instructions

  1. Collect the following supplies.
  2. Follow the linked instructions for directions on how to build a bottle ecosystem.
  3. Turn in a picture of your completed bottle ecosystem.

If you do not have your science kit, the thermometer can be bought at a pet store and mung beans from a garden center. You can use any string, but make sure it can absorb water.

Research

To do this project, you must understand an ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their environment. We can use bottles to build models of ecosystems to test out our question. Click the link to read about the basics of bottle ecosystems (A.K.A. TerrAqua Column).

Option 2: Virtual Bottle Ecosystem

  1. Click the link for the template and make your own copy of it.
  2. Click the link for the instructions and use them to determine where to drag and drop all the pieces to make a picture of a bottle ecosystem in the "Bottle Build" section.
  3. Be sure to check if you are in Group A or Group B. If you are in Group B, you will have some unused pieces to drag to the "Unused Pieces" section.
  4. Submit the link to your finished Google Drawing.
