The Birth of John Hopkins

John Hopkins was born in Whitehall, on a sprawling tobacco farm in Anne Arundel County. He moved to Baltimore at 17 to help out family. He would initially be very successful in selling Tobaccco, but as his wealth increased he would shift to Banking. Hopkins was renown for his generosity and kindness. Unfortunately, Hopkins would pass away in 1873 and his last wish was to build a discrimination free university and hospital.

Here you can put a highlighted title

With Genially templates, you can include visual resources to leave your audience speechless. You can also highlight a specific phrase or data that will be etched in the memory of your audience, and even embed external content that surprises: videos, photos, audios... Whatever you want!

Building the Johns Hopkins Hospital

Johns Hopkins University opened in 1876 and The Johns Hopkins Hospital was completed in 1889. It was considered a national marvel when it opened. It was believed to be the largest medical center in the country, with 17 buildings, 330 beds, 25 physicians and 200 employees.

Tip:

Interactivity is the key to capturing the interest and attention of your audience. A genially is interactive because your audience explores and interacts with it.

The Truth about John Hopkins

In 2020, Hopkin's reputation as an abolitionist was refuted. It was discovered he enslaved at least four Black individuals before the Civil War.

Henrietta Lacks

In 1951, a young mother of five named Henrietta Lacks visited The Johns Hopkins Hospital, one of only a few hospitals to treat poor African-Americans. She complained of vaginal bleeding and it was discovered to be cervical cancer. They took cells from her for study and analysis without consent. Scientists recognized her cells were incredible in property as her cells would multiply and divide infinitely. Unfortunately Lacks passed away on October 4, 1951, at the age of 31.
