Love can affect many parts of our life but so can the mistreatment of love.

The story beging with a girl called Pheoby walking down a path with a group of boys taking with one another about her. She is sat down on the porch of her house by a women called Janie. Janie tells her a story which begings with her first kiss which her grandmother sees and forces her to get marries to a man called Logan Killicks. Logan KIllicks shouts at Janie a lot to help in the yard at which time Janie visits her grandmother and tries to get help about love and how to love Logan Killicks. Janie learns nothing and runs away with a man called Joe. They arrive at a 'town' which is more like a single house with a mayor. Joe makes the town better by adding more utilities such as a post office and Janie meets a man called Teacake. The story ends with both Pheoby and Janie taking and heading inside.

Quote 1: “‘cause you told me Ah mus gointer love him, and Ah don’t” (23) Quote 1 explanation: The quote is saying that Judie doesn’t love her husband because, as she goes on to say, is unlovable and terrible. Quote 2: “You ain’t got no particular place. It’s wherever Ah need yuh. Git uh move on yuh…”(31). Quote 2 explanation: Her husband is making her do unreasonable things, for that time, and screaming and shouting at her whenever she opposes him. Quote 3: “She knew that marriage did not make love. Janie’s first dream was dead, so she became a women” (25). Quote 3 explanation: “She is unlovengly married into a marriage which ends up in her being abused and her not loving him and vice versa Quote 4: “Lawd, Ah know dat grassgut liver-lipted nigger ain’t done took and beat mah baby already!” (22) Quote 4 explanation: Janie’s grandmother, Nanny, is concerned that Janie’s new husband is beating her because Janie is coming to her with troubles.
