History

The Tower Bridge was built between 1886 and 1894. It took five major contractors and the hard work of 432 workers to complete the Tower Bridge. Two huge pillars that took 11,000 tons of steel were built on foundations that were sunk into the river bed.

It's opening to the public dates back to 30 June of the same year, with an official inauguration ceremony presided over by the future King Edward VII, who was together with his wife Alexandra of Denmark. The bridge linked Iron Gate on the river's northern bank with Horselydown Lane to the south, an outlet now known as Tower Bridge and Tower Bridge Road.
