Theme: Even in times of desperation, it is important to hold true to your morals and do the right thing.
In the fiction novel "How to Steal a Dog", by Barbara O'Conner a girl named Georgina and her younger brother Toby go through challenges no kids should have to face. These 2 are homeless and live in a car with their single mother, in this book the kids try to find a way to make money when they have an idea. They needed money for rent and a place to live so they started strategically planning on how to steal a dog in hopes that the owner to offer money for their lost pet. As if stealing a dog wasn't hard enough, they meet a stranger along the way that teaches them honesty and integrity. The 2 children make friends with the owner to make it seem as what they had done wasn't as bad but it made them think if they should still go through with the plan. After long days and sleepless nights of hiding a dog from their mom and their "friend", they finally get an offer they couldn't refuse. The older sister brings the dog back to its rightful owner but instead of taking the reward money, she confesses to the crime she committed. The owner gives her grace and is in shock but grateful that they returned the dog unharmed. The family of 3 finds a place to live and the kids are still in touch with the owner and the dog.
