Possessive Forms
Possessive forms are used to show ownership or possession of something by a noun or name.They indicate that something belongs to or is associated with a particular person, animal, place, or thing. In English, possessive forms are typically created by adding an apostrophe and an "s" ('s) to the noun.
Plural Nouns
Singular nouns
If the noun is plural, only add the apostrophe +' after the "s".
- The dogs' leashes. (the leashes belong to the dogs)
- The students' notebooks. (the notebooks belong to the students.
- The trees' leaves. (the leaves belong to the trees.)
If the noun is singular, add the apostrophe +'s to the noun.
- The dog's bone belongs (the bone belongs to the dog)
- Sarah's car. (the car belongs to Sarah)
- Book's cover. (the cover belongs to the book)
Nouns ending in "s"
When it comes to names that end in s, you have the choice of adding either an apostrophe followed by an s or an apostrophe.
- James' or James's house.
- Thomas' or Thomas's computer.
