African Americans in Bexar County had mixed lives due to their owner's occupation, but they worked hard to make a place for themselves in society.

This chart shows that Bexar County was not a traditional "planter" society compared to the rest of the South since only two farmers in the entire county met that standard meaning most slaves did not work on farms.

Now classified as freedmen, men needed to find jobs to provide for themselves and their families. This was very difficult since most African Americans had no formal education or lacked skills needed in society

This chart helps show that it was very hard for freed African men to find work since their previous occupations were no longer in need or didn't provide them with the skills for other jobs.
