Methdology & Reasoning
Why and how I want to approach this project
- Podcast that reflects how students who are POC and from marginalized groups navigate their mental health from attending a PWI
- HUB being the ONLY space for students of color and how that can be detrimental to our college career
- Anonymous interviews from students of color
Interviews
#1: “It feels very different from high school, where I am from, it was much more diverse. So the lack of diversity–you can tell on an everyday basis. It doesn’t disturb you that much academically but as far as the culture inside the school and events, I wish it was more diversified so I can find classes, clubs, and teams that I fit in more.”
#2: “Honestly, it feels suffocating. Rather than the HUB I don't really have a place to be myself or connect with other students. I have clubs (MSO) that I attend but even so it’s only a couple of events every semester rather than something I didn’t know I had to face every day.”
Analysis of & from Podcast
- An institution that doesn’t acknowledge these specific problem
- Impactful to our mental health but school promotes the generalized “mental health care” only via student email and posters
- Counselors and other resources are made up of predominantly white staff and faculty
Incorporation of Mindfulness
- Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Courses: Introduce MBSR or similar programs to teach stress management and resilience skills, integrating them into academic curriculum or extracurricular activities.
- Mindful Listening and Dialogue Circles: Facilitate safe spaces where students can share experiences mindfully, fostering empathy and reducing feelings of isolation.
- Mindfulness Programs and Workshops: Offer mindfulness programs specifically tailored to the experiences and needs POC students. (Ex. Our AIP, workshops on mindfulness techniques, guided meditation sessions, and discussions on applying mindfulness to navigate difficult emotions and experiences.
- Understanding our student dynamics
- Every day experiences and how mindfulness can impactfully help students navigate these journeys
- Listening and implementing student voices
