Introduction

Both
GD
ASD

GD, Gender Dysphoria, is a distressing mental state defined by a disparity between one’s internal sense of being male or female and one’s biological sex.

There has been a link found between ASD and GD, with higher rates of GD in the ASD population than in the total population.

ASD, short for Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental syndrome that is defined by deficits in social skills and communication.

The Problems

This could potentially make it harder for individuals with ASD to get diagnosed with GD or even understand that what they are feeling is GD.

Individuals with ASD already struggle with expressing themselves and communicating with others.

The connection was only recently discovered, so there isn't much evidence.

Purpose and Research Question

Purpose

Research Question:

“What is the relationship between ASD and GD, and what causes this overlap?”

Finding information, evidence, theories, concepts, and more, and compiling it together to gain insight and clarity.

I like to learn about how things work and why things happen.

This topic is important to me because I relate when it comes to difficulties with understanding yourself and how you feel.

“A Relation Between Autistic Traits and Gender Self-concept: Evidence from Explicit and Implicit Measures”

https://doi.org/10.1007/s10803-019-04262-z Kallitsounaki, Aimilia, and David Williams. "A relation between autism traits and gender self-concept: evidence from explicit and implicit measures." Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 50.2 (2020): 429-439.

they created and performed a study that measured explicit and implicit evidence. The results indicate that as the number of ASD traits increases, the strength of the explicit and implicit gender self-concepts decreases. This piece comes from a reputable source. I know this because it is peer-reviewed and written by an informed scholar.

“Brief Report: Links Between Nonconformity to Gender Norms, Autistic Features, and Internalizing Symptoms in a Non‑clinical College Sample”

https://doi.org/10.1007/s10803-021-05033-5 Schiltz, Hillary K., et al. "Brief Report: Links Between Nonconformity to Gender Norms, Autistic Features, and Internalizing Symptoms in a Non-clinical College Sample." Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 53.4 (2023): 1717-1725.

They created this study to explore the associations between conformity to gender norms, broader autism phenotype characteristics, autism features, and internalizing symptoms. The results suggest that those with more autistic communication or BAP features reported more non-conformity to physical gender presentation conventions. This piece comes from a reputable source. I know this because it is peer-reviewed and written by an informed scholar.

“Gender dysphoria and autism spectrum disorder: A narrative review”

This study reviews the available clinical and empirical data. This paper concludes with the idea that not only one hypothesis, but multiple hypotheses may play a role in the co-occurrence of GD and ASD. This piece comes from a reputable source. I know this because it is peer-reviewed and written by an informed scholar.

“Gender Identity in Autism: Sex Differences in Social Affiliation with Gender Groups”

https://doi.org/10.1007/s10803-018-3590-1 Cooper, Kate, Laura GE Smith, and Ailsa J. Russell. "Gender identity in autism: Sex differences in social affiliation with gender groups." Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 48.12 (2018): 3995-4006.

The results found high rates of gender variance in autism, with females particularly varied in their gender identities. This piece comes from a reputable source. I know this because it is peer-reviewed and written by an informed scholar.

“The Co-occurrence of Gender Dysphoria and Autism Spectrum Disorder in Adults: An Analysis of Cross-Sectional and Clinical Chart Data”

https://doi.org/10.1007/s10803-018-3480-6 Heylens, Gunter, et al. "The co-occurrence of gender dysphoria and autism spectrum disorder in adults: An analysis of cross-sectional and clinical chart data." Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders 48 (2018): 2217-2223.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of autistic traits and ASD in adults with GD, to comparethe results with existing literature on the topic. The results show an over-representation of autistic traits and ASD in both MAB and FAB compared to the general population. This piece comes from a reputable source. I know this because it is peer-reviewed and written by an informed scholar.
