INTRODUCTION
It is estimated that more than 30,000 people experience homelessness every year in Maryland, based on the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development's 2021 Annual Report. There are many factors that influence homelessness in Maryland, including housing affordability, unemployment rates, mental/physical health issues, and substance abuse. Homelessness affects individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and demographics, including families with children, veterans, and LGBTQ+ youth. Affordable housing, support services, and community participation are needed to address this problem. The high cost of living in urban areas such as Baltimore and the limited availability of affordable housing in rural areas make it difficult for Maryland's homeless population to access affordable housing. Homelessness is further exacerbated by limited access to mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and job training programs. Collaboration between government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community stakeholders is essential to addressing homelessness.
Research Method:
- Review of Maryland Homelessness Statistics and Trends
- Interviews with Homeless Individuals and Service Providers
- Participation in Homeless Outreach Programs

It would provide a platform for the critique of existing systems and the advocacy for policy and attitude changes towards homelessness. It engages audience participation and reflection to inspire empathy, awareness, and action in response to homelessness. It is our goal to encourage critical thinking about homelessness and empower individuals to become advocates and take action in order to end homelessness. In this illustration, everyone has a safe and secure place to live surrounded by supportive networks and resources in a vibrant, inclusive community.
Through performance, the Utopian Performative envisions and explores solutions to societal issues, including homelessness. Provides an optimistic portrayal of a society with safe, affordable housing for everyone and a society eradicating homelessness. Encourages creative storytelling to imagine alternative futures for homelessness and solutions.

The evaluation criteria for this project are the following:
COSTUMES
SOUND
SET DESIGN
LIGHTING
Traffic, sirens, and crowds are used to create the urban environment. Wind blowing, distant voices, and animal sounds help to enhance realism. Soft, melodies accentuate hardship in scenes, uplifting music accentuates triumph in moments and quiet to reflect tension.
The alleyway backdrop represents the hidden corners where many homeless people reside. Tent or shelter encampment shows the makeshift homes of the homeless. Soup kitchen scene emphasizes the importance of support from the community.
Light that is dim and cold evokes the harsh reality of street life. Light that is bright and warm conveys moments of hope and transition when homeless individuals find homes.
To depict homeless individuals the clothes would have a worn-out appearance and layers. Bright, clean clothes depict a fresh start when the characters transition out of homelessness.
