In In Antebellum Bexas County, free African Americans were rare, but, slavery rates were lower than other cities due to lack of agriculture.

Cattle trade was more succesful enterpirse than cotton in Bexar, as majority of slaves worked as a "farmers" or stock-raiser. Other occupations included servants of houses or farms, or widows,

Day of Jubilee

With the end of slavery, Bexar transtioned to a Urban life, due to the lack of slave workers.

A little over 1/5 of African Americans posses some type of skill level. The found themselves at the bottom of social class

Housing before Residential Segregation

Segregation was not forced in the 1800's, resulting in the number of African Americans to be roughly equal in each ward. normally clustered around churches and schools. Lack of job oppurtunity for women became notable.

Within Bexar, the Jim Crow Era proved to be challenging with the large "Mexican" population and the increaese of mixed races. Racial boundaires were questioned by the stories of William Ellis and runaway Dolores Brown,
