Topic Introduction/Activating Prior Knowledge
Teachers will:
1. Work with their groups to discuss what they already know about differentiated instruction; ways they've used it in their classroom; and what they hope to gain from this professional development. 2. Write their responses on sticky notes and add them to designated posters on the wall. 3. Each group will share their responses with the whole group.
Presenter Notes:
This activity helps teachers tap into their background knowledge, reflect on their teaching practices, and what they would like to learn when it comes to differentiated instruction.
Agenda
Professional Development Introduction
Differentiated instruction is an important part of the teaching process that enables teachers to accomondate all students by addressing their learning needs in the classrooms.
Learning Goals:
This professional development aims to explore different aspects of differentiated instruction and how it can benefit students and maximize their learning outcomes. Teachers will be able to effectively implement differentiated instruction to meet each student's interests, needs, and strengths.
Agenda
Who are our students?
Our students have different levels of motivation, different learning styles, different attitudes about learning, and different responses to classroom environments and instructional practices. Teachers need to recognize these differences to meet the diverse needs of these students. (Brent, R. & Felder, R., 2005)
Agenda
Group Activity: Identifying Students
Teachers will:
1. Discuss and identify students with varied learning needs in their classrooms. 2. Make a list of these students. We will revisit these students and discuss different ways to support them through differentiated instruction.
Presenter Notes:
This activity helps teachers reflect on the different types of students that make up their classrooms. In a later group activity, teachers will work together to identify types of differentiation that best suit each learner to maximize their learning outcomes.
Agenda
Importance of Differentiated Instruction
What is differentiated instruction and why does it matter in the classroom?
Differentiated instruction is the process of customizing lessons to accommodate students' learning needs. It plays a crucial role in promoting student success and enhancing teachers' instructional practices (Shaffer, J. 2022).
Benefits of differentiated instruction include:
- It allows teachers to connect to students' different learning styles.
- It enables every student to keep up with their learning objectives.
- It boosts students' motivation to learn challenging materials in class.
(Southern Illinois University, 2023)
Agenda
4 Areas for Differentiation
Content
Process
Refers to students' learning styles/preferences. Differentiation can include accommodating students with visual, auditory, or kinesthetic support. Teachers can also take into account their students’ level of readiness, interests, or learning profiles to determine the amount of support they may need.
Refers to the knowledge and skills students need to master. Since students vary in their level of familiarity with the content, differentiation can include assigning different leveled tasks such as remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating content.
Learning Environment
Product
Refers to the physical and psychological elements in the classroom that impact learning. Differentiation can include having a flexible classroom layout, incorporating various types of furniture, and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.
Refers to what students create at the end of the lesson to reflect the mastery of the content (e.g. tests, projects, reports, and other activities). Differentiation can include assigning activities that students prefer based on their learning styles.
(Weselby, 2014)
Agenda
Examples of Differentiated Activities
Content
Process
- Provide mall group instruction/learning intervention.
- Use flexible grouping or re-group students based on content, ability, and interests.
- Use songs, anchor charts, and other visual aids to support learning.
- Have students work on building content vocabulary.
- Assign reading materials that match students' reading levels.
- Use hands-on activities for some learners to help them understand a new idea.
- Re-teach the concept to students who need further demonstration and exempt students.
Learning Environment
Product
- Provide space for quiet work and student collaboration.
- Use alternative seating.
- Identify classroom management procedures that make the learning environment safe and supportive.
- Use a wide variety of assessments.
- Allow students to help design products around learning goals.
- Allow different working arrangements (alone or with a group.
- Provide assignments at different degrees of difficulty to match student readiness.
Agenda
(State of New South Wales, 2015)
Group Activity: Applying Differentiated Instruction
Teachers will:
1. Identify the areas for differentiation that match the needs of the selected students. 2. Come up with differentiated activities to accommodate these students. 3. Create a poster or graphic organizer to present/share your ideas with the whole group.
Presenter Notes:
This activity helps teachers identify types of differentiation that best suit each learner to maximize their learning outcomes.
Agenda
Supplemental Resources
How to Write a Differentiated Lesson Plan
A Close look at Scaffolding vs. Differentiation
How to Use Technology to Differentiate Instruction in the Classroom
What is Differentiated Instruction in the Classroom
Agenda
Follow Up PLan for Professional Development
1. Self Assessment: Reflect on areas of improvement. 2. Goal Setting: Establish measurable goals that help improve instructional practice to maintain ongoing professional development. 3. Research Opportunities: Explore workshops, courses, and conferences that provide further professional development. 4. Apply Knowledge: Develop an action plan for implementing new skills to reinforce learning.
A survey will be sent to teachers to assess the level of implementation success after the professional development. This is an important process to help determine whether additional PD or other support is needed.
